I am not sure if I will be joining you or not, but here's some info about us. My name is Stacey and my DD (7) Anastasia is having some issues at school regarding her spelling and reading. She is in 1st grade. They are threatening to keep her back but I must say have been trying everything in their power to help her. She seems to have issues specifically with differentiating between "b", "d" and "p" and "n" and "m". During spelling tests she capitalizes these letters wherever they may be.... I'm assuming so that she doesn't get it confused (such as raNt or wiPe). Sometimes she still writes certain letters backwards. When she tells time she also mixes up the numbers.... so 3:02 on the clock and she may read 3:20.
She knows 80 of the 100 sight words and can read them if they are in a list form but when it comes to actually reading them in sentences and paragraphs, she has a hard time. She sounds words out but ends up totally mixing up the letters in their order or skipping a letter all together at times. They recognize that there is a problem and they are wondering if it's the auditory to comprehending the task that is the problem.
At home she can't do multiple tasks at once, for example if I ask her to clean her room, she becomes overwhelmed and freaks out claiming there's too much to do. She can only handle say "Pick up the clothes in your room" or "pick up all the papers on the floor" etc. Her brother though who is only 5 can clean his room in a matter of 15min with no problem.
Currently, they have her in the evaluation stage where they are trying different exercises and are going to have her see the school speech therapist JIC. I personally would like for her to be tested for dyslexia and possible ADD. I am not a fan of ADD b/c I do believe it's overly diagnosed.....however if this is her real problem than the right steps need to be taken. We've already restricted her diet in this area in hope that it may help. Any advice you ladies can give me would be great!! TIA!!

Welcome, I am Jennifer mommy to Alexis, who is almost 6. She is VI, autistic, and has moderate MR. She is in special ed K and has been center based since she was 2 1/2.

It definately sounds as if there is something going on, but again, is it auditory processing, comprehension, or dyslexia, I am not sure. I agree that she should be tested for dyslexia at the very least. I don't know too much about ADD, so I can't help you there, but my only recommendation would be if you think she needs to be evaluated, make sure you PUSH PUSH PUSH. Even if the school district won't do it, most insurances would cover that kind of evaluation (I believe it falls under mental health). I know it can be rough and frusdtrating waiting for the evals and finding out exactly what is going on, but once that is done, then the appropriate steps can be taken. I hope you get answers soon. Do you have any idea on when the evals are taking place? And who all will be evaluating her, is it just speech and the school pyschologist, or is anyone else going to be involved?

I wish you guys good luck and speedy answers. I hope you enjoy posting here.

I'm not 100% sure. They sent me home a bunch of test forms to fill out. Has about 100 questions. By the questions I can tell what they are testing for.... ADD, ADHD, OCD and dyspraxia. I will ask again about the dyslexia at the next meeting. It certainly won't hurt to at least get her evaluated. Thanks again for your help!
