You really do have to teach me how you've had success, cuz LJ is quite a bit older and all we've had are accidents, no poop accidents, which tells me he must have some control, but he sits on the toilet a lot, but he pees when he isn't on it.

Thing one: A month or so before we started PL I would say "eeeeeeew pee, eeeeeeeew poop" when he messed his diaper and then "that goes in the potty!" And pretty soon he was parroting me and he still does when the girls mess their diapers he says "oh eeeeeeeeeeew, oh no! in the potty!" lol
Thing two:I Introduce underpants a day or two before beginning, make a HUGE deal about what a lucky kid he is to be able to wear BIG BOY underpants and find a couple new activities that only BIG BOYS that wear BIG BOY underpants can do. (jakes was coloring with markers and walking in the store instead of riding in the cart). But I totally made him wait til the day after I introduced underpants and told him cool things he could do so he could anticipate it and get all geared up to do everything he could for the cool underpants and the new privileges.
Thing three: I introduced the potty, I put him in the underpants. He will not see another diaper (aside from sleep time right now) again. The end. It doesn't matter if we are out, it doesn't matter if he pees in his underpants every single time. His diapers are gone and he is a BIG BOY. I keep the potty in his play area and he sits on it when he eats (gross maybe, but he is DISTRACTED when he eats and pees every time). That's how I got it in his head that that's what I wanted him to do, he accidentally peed in there twice and I did the potty dance and cheered and let him flush the toilet (a HUGE no no otherwise) and then he gets a hershey kiss (1 for pee 2 for poop).
Anyway day 1 he peed all over the dang place in the morning then had a good evening. Day 2 he had a hard time at the birthday party but did great the rest of the day, and today he had 1 accident because we went out and he couldn't get his pants off/up the stairs fast enough and is currently napping so we'll see how the afternoon/evening go. He finally grasped today how to pee on demand instead of accidentally pee on the potty. He is VERY VERY happy with himself and doesn't require any prompting to use the potty.
Our biggest issue is he hates wearing clothes lol, he wants to streak all over the place. I'm allowing it until day 6, then I will require he wear a shirt and underpants. day 12 I will require him to wear pants as well and then after the first month I will gear him up to use the big potty with a big boy potty seat on it and a stool. . . .right now he wants to play in the toilet water and flush it 1000 times so it's annoying lol, but I will teach him not to do that.
There is my book. I never read a book or anything it's just what I've foudn works in my time as a nanny. The signs for readiness have to be there though. He knew when he was peeing/pooping and would grab his diaper, he also grasped that it was icky and knew that I wanted him to pee and poop in the potty, if he didn't do those things I would have waited. Gracie was 2.5 almost 3 when she was really trained (but she has asperger's so that didn't help though I didn't know it at the time)

See I refuse to "potty" train. I won't use a potty. That's more work to me than the diaper, a lot more work actually. But the rest of that sounds similar to what I do, I do put him back in a diaper for going out until I've had success (which with LJ so far is not at all, so I'm obviously talking about the older two I've potty trained).

Every kid is different. Gracie was older when she finally had an interest. And as for the potty, I hate it, but he wouldn't stop playing in the toilet water so I had to re-think my little potty aversion lol. He can't play in it so he can actually focus to pee. . .I'm not sure he won't regress but I've got all my crossables crossed and am praying he doesn't.

I see advantages to the potty over the toilet (though I actually use the words interchangably) but I do not want to have to go that route. I may have to rethink it if I don't get some success, I really am hoping to have LJ done sometime before the new baby gets here.

You can get a lid that fits on the regular size potty to convert, my potty actually does that.

Yeah we have a lid, but we don't need it.
