I was looking up how to sew toddler/baby bedding and I started thinking, I could sew bedding for us too. I was just wondering, how do I go about finding out how much fabric to buy for a queen sized bed? I'm more interested in making sheets than anything, because sheets can be pricey for how fast we go through them. I would also love to make them out of some heavier fabric for winter.

Would it be best to just try to measure a set of sheets we have now or is there some kind of general guide?

I think you should measure it and then maybe talk to someone in the fabric store or department.
