Just wondering if anyone's child has had a barium swallow? If so, how did they do drinking the barium?

Luke goes a week from Monday just to rule out problems with feeding. They think it's texture aversion but want to be sure since he's been so gaggy with foods with an ounce of texture.

Ava had a VSS with barium. The barium was flavored so she had no issues with the taste. She was starving by then too.

I hope Luke's study goes well! Good Luck and KUP!

Yes, Teighan had it done for the same reasons that Luke is going. They make the child no drink/eat anything after a certain time, so by the time they gave Teighan the barium, he sucked it down like it was food. We had to take it away from him for a couple of minutes & he flipped out, he actually wanted to drink it all. Then we gave it back to him & they continued. DH & I were in the room & while he was drinking it, we were able to see the barium go through his digestive track. It was neat to see. There are/were no obstructions, Teighan still doesn't eat solids so he's on Alimentum & in OT weekly to learn how to take food w/ out throwing up, he doesn't deal w/ texture of any kind. Not even paint or playdoh, he doesn't like things on his hands. It's been a challenge & it's a slow process. I hope all goes well for Luke. Some kids just have this easy reflux & have a difficult time swallowing etc., Teighan is one of those kids. Thankfully it's more psychological w/ him & not something that we had to treat w/ a surgery.

GL & again KUP

Oh my gosh, Carter is the exact same! He eats fine with a spoon, but no finger or table foods at all, but everything else goes in his mouth. Little stinkers!

Carter has the barium swallow test too, he was really hungry and had it in the morning, they told us to bring a bottle or cup he would drink out of that they don't mind ruining. He drank it fine, and my Dh said it went well, I was pregnant at the time so I had to wait outside

I hope Luke does well!

My son is getting tested as well soon. (Hopefully). We just had taken him to a ped gi specialist 2.5 hours away and that was what they wanted to do. What kind of problems does Luke have if you don't mind me asking? Our son, has some issues with vomiting. As in, he vomits almost everything up, no sour faces or anything like that he just brings it al up randomly. Very strange indeed. We've been on so many meds for reflux but nothing has worked thus far. So now this is the road we're heading on. Granted, he hasnt exactly lost weight, but he was so small to begin with that its hard to even fathom the idea of him losing weight. He also has started standing while he would be eating in his high chair. Joys. Hope his test goes well.

He would not drink the barium. So, we did a modified swallow instead. He ate applesauce with barium & did fine. No problems swallowing & he's protecting his airway when he does swallow. He had some residual food left on his tongue after swallowing so we have to do a "dry" swallow every few bites. So, thinking it's texture aversion. Now we have to fight with insurance to get him some ST.

Hunter wouldn't do the straight barium either, we had to mix it both times we did it. It's great he's not aspirating though, what a great result!! Sorry to hear that you will have to do a feeding mod though. Those are never fun, no matter what you have to do. What textures is he averse to? Any way you can mix chunks with sauce to slowly get him adapted?

And OY VEY with fighting with insurances. I am so sick of them!!! Good luck, I hope you get plenty of visits with minimal fight!!

We go Monday for his ST eval. I am trying everything I can think of right now to encourage him to put food to his mouth. I let him play in pureed food, hand over hand with a dipper spoon, bought him a Z Vibe with the spoon tip, gum & cheek massage etc. Hoping she has some other tips that may help. He'll feed us, just not himself.
