I always get developmental/learning toys.
This year Anika got a puzzle and a Dora Playdoh set, and a large Finding Nemo Go Fish set (she has terrible fine motor, so I"m hoping this will help), she got a baby Cabbage Patch which she really wanted. The one gift I"m really nervous about is she reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaally wanted that Swan Lake Ballerina set. I hate to not let her try something just because she probably can't do it, but I hate to see her get frustrated and feel badly about herself, so I"m hoping I can modify it to make it more like a PT thing.... I hope.
Aleah isn't really interested in toys, but she did get this Leap Frog thing from my BIL that I can put in her crib. It's like a play yard, but not really. Dern, I don't know the name. Anywho, it plays classical music (pretty loudly, so I'm optimistic she has some hearing) and lots of flashy lights, which she loves.
But, she (they) got LOADS of junk. I'm not really into learning toys per se, more into play and learning by experience and using the senses. But, they got tons of them anyway. Our nurse told me our family room looked like a day care center this morning. It was her first day back since Christmas Eve.
