When we woke up yesterday I took my son's temperature first thing since he'd been sick for a couple of days. He had spiked to 105.9 and he was shaking really badly. I tried giving him some medicine which he couldn't kept down and put him in a luke warm bath to try to lower his temperature. I also called 911 and they had an ambulance here within 5 minutes. They checked him out as best they could and drove us to a hospital just 10 minutes away. The only one I knew of up until yesterday is 45 minutes away so I'm really glad I made the call. They started working to cool him down and told me the shaking had been a febrile seizure brought on by the fever. They ended up doing a bunch of blood work and a chest x-ray, but knew just from the exam that something was up with his tonsils. They ended up deciding on tonsillitis and possibly strep throat. He's home and on antibiotics. I have to give him Tylenol every 4 hours and hope that his temperature stays down. As of this morning he's been under 100.5 for around 12 hours and he's started drinking again. His temperature spiked despite the fact that he was already on Motrin for his fever so there's no guarantee that it won't shoot back up again. He has to take his antibiotic 3 times a day for 10 days, but after 6 doses he won't be contagious anymore and by day 3 the fever should be pretty much gone.

Oh, poor guy! I use to spike really high fevers like that and have febrile seizures from them when I was little too. It's so scary when our little ones are sick! I was worried about you when you hadn't gotten online that I had seen yesterday, so I was praying that everything was okay. I will continue to pray that your little one is feeling better soon! Keep us posted.

Thanks. His fever is still down at this point, but he's starting to get cranky again which usually happens before it rises. I'm taking him to the doctor on Friday to make sure the antibiotics are doing the trick. I thought it was scary when my husband went in for chest pains, but this was so much worse. I knew my husband would be okay, but yesterday I just didn't have that certainty.
