Nolan turned 2 on Oct 4th, and tonight I cut his soothers and now I'm listening to my little toot crying his little heart out in his crib, what have I done
I cut them in front of him, just as I was cutting his 2nd one, he looked at me in shock and put the first one in his mouth, but of course it was cut short so it kept falling out--he was not impressed! Now the little turkey has to cry himself to sleep, I feel like an awful mommy

You're not a bad mom ! You know you're doing it for his own sake. It's going to be hard the first couple of nights but he'll get used to sleeping without it and will soon forget.
My mom tells me that when I was 2 my uncle stepped on my paci and threw it in the trash. I cried a lot and hated him at first, but soon forgot. Believe me, I adore my uncle. It left no lasting effect.
I hope he is already asleep by now, and tomorrow will be much easier.

Its been an hour and a half and he's still crying---------I went in and soothed and comforted, sang songs and snuggled, and he's back to crying. Seriously, after 90 mins you'd think he'd either throw up or fall asleep...

You are a lot braver than me. AJ turned 2 on August 5th and I am waiting for him to put holes in his remaining two so we can have "the talk". I am toying with snipping it after Christmas. Haven't gotten the guts up so far. He only gets it at nap and bedtime though.

Thank you Ladies I listened at 9:40 and he was finally quiet. I can't believe how hard that was! I have three good soothers left in my nightstand if things get too tough tonight (DH is working nights). Poor little man, he was so distraught! He's never attached to a blanket or toy or anything, just his trains, so I've taken away his only source of comfort
Noley has also only has his soother for naps and night, the nap tomorrow could be tough! I took him to the dental clinic last month and they said his front teeth were already shifted from the soother, so it had to go. Think he'll remember this in the morning?

Do yourself a favor and throw away the good ones right now. You don't need the temptation! Much to my objection people kept giving DS soothers when he was a newborn and he ended up addicted. I didn't wait as long to stop them though. He was about 9 months old when I took them away because he never wanted them out of his mouth. I knew it'd be a battle and didn't want to have it living in an apartment with thin walls so he lost them early. I just threw them away. My family was furious with me and figured I should just let him have them until he was old enough to just give them up. As if toddlers are known for just giving up an addiction. He threw horrible fits for days and not just when he was tired, but he eventually turned to his Bear Bear instead of looking for a soother. All you can do is be persistent. If you give him one that you have tucked away he'll assume that crying will get him one the next time you snip them and he'll be willing to cry a lot longer. Just be tough, mama. It's the best thing you can do for him right now.

Thank you so much for the advice! He woke up twice last night but put himself back to sleep without me going in. This morning I found one cut one had been thrown across the room, his other one was tucked inside his hand. He brought them in to show his dad this morning, he made a pouty face and held them up I know I need to throw the good ones away, maybe I need them more than him, LOL! Wish me luck for naptime today!

Good Luck today. We haven't been to the dentist yet and I am sure we will get a talking to when we go in, but for now it is easier this way. Even with the binky AJ cried for 30 minutes last night just cause he didn't want to sleep. Oh, and AJ was the same way - not attached to anything but the binky. I just started putting some stuffed animals in his crib and now he cuddles them and has his binky so maybe it won't be so bad when we snip the binky. He keeps them in the crib cause they are only for night night.

What is the snipping you keep talking about? I've never heard of doing anything more than throwing them out. Do you cut the end off so they can't keep it in their mouths?

I hope nap time went okay. You are not a bad mom you are only looking out for him in the long run. I hope he forgets about them soon. Stay strong!

You are a great mom! It's something that has to be done...I am dreading it. Tay has 3 months till 2 and we have 2 bad habits to cut out...talk about a bad mom...we still give her a bottle...shhhh. Not to go to sleep but that's the only way she will drink her milk and she had alot of weight concerns so I couldn't take it away...I feel like I'm her mother and her gaining weight is more important to me. But now she is gaining better so I think it's time. She loves her milk she drinks about 21-30 oz a day. I tried to take it away before but this lil girl is stubborn she went 8 hours without drinking.

He refused to nap for us yesterday without his soother, so he skipped his nap, which went great b/c he was tired at bedtime and only cried 20 mins before falling asleep-woohoo!!! I'm going to try to sew him a Diego quilt (LOVES Diego!), just a little carry blankie one he can snuggle with. He napped 45 mins with the sitter today, so I'm hoping he'll fall asleep quick again tonight. Thank you so much for the support, ladies This was hard, but I'm so happy its done!! Also, I'm gonna throw out our three "backup" soothers we've got hidden tonight

You're not a bad mom! You're doing it for his own good and he'll learn to live without it sooner or later. Maybe you can give him a blankie or other special toy to cuddle with instead.
