Hi everyone! I'm new to JM and my husband and I are TTC our first and our having some problems. Over the past year I've gained 60 lbs that I can't lose. This troubles me because my husband and I are really active-I run 10 or more miles a week and work out at least once a day. I've tried very hard to lose the weight since I started gaining it, most of the gain was quite sudden, I've tried healthy ways and unhealthy ways. I know I don't eat exactly perfect but I don't eat trash all the time. We have our cheat meals twice a week and we only go out to the bar with friends once a week. Over the past few months I've been extremely tired to the point that it interferes with us doing anything because I'm so tired. I've been depressed off and on and my cycles are irregular. I'm going to the doctor on Tuesday to discuss this but was just wondering if anyone else here had hypothyroidism and what I've described sounds right or I'm just looking for an excuse for being fat?!? I've never had problems with weight before because I've been active and I'm only 24 so this is really starting to bother me. Thanks for any advice you give!!

You're not just looking for excuses - by the sound of your symptoms you could definately be hypo! I know how frustrating it can be! I was dx about 1.5 years ago. When you talk to your dr ask them to run TSH, Free T3, & Free T4 tests. They usually only run a TSH test so be sure you ask them to run the others. Testing your Free's is a better indication of how your thyroid is actually doing than the TSH. Some drs won't test your Free's so if that is the case I would probably go ahead & get only a TSH test run, keeping in mind you need to find someone to run FT3 & FT4. If your dr is unwilling to run the free's you might find a good dr on the Thyroid Top Drs web site. I found my dr on this site (my 3rd one who I FINALLY liked - my first 2 were from referrals).

Also, you should check out the Thyroid disorders board - the ladies there have such a wealth of information (btw, I'm on there a lot too). If it turns out that you are hypo I would recommend buying & reading Living Well with Hypothyroidism by Mary Shomon. It will bring you up to speed on the condition & the thyroid board will help with anything the book leaves out. GL & KUP!
