Heya! Well, my period was 28 days on BCP but when I stopped to ttc became horribly irregular. Started 30 days for two months then went longer and longer (had a 4mth gap at one point).
Then I got pregs, finally, with my daughter Dakota. As I was breastfeeding my period didn't return until she was 9mths and I never went on birth control because I was happy to ttc2. I was trying to be relaxed about it so didn't track my periods but I they were around the same time monthly so I think about a 30 day cycle. THEN I got pregs but miscarried (very early) and it was 8wks before my period returned. Since then I have been tracking and charting and my cycle has been all over the place AND stuck with a luteal phase defect. My daughter is now over 3.
The doc puts it down to breastfeeding and wants me to wait another 6mths! I think, somehow, its linked to the miscarriage throwing my hormones out of whack. Hard to say as I wasn't tracking before then but to answer your question - it could be from the birth of your daughter, that your hormones never re-regulated...but maybe its just something else. Its not really important how long your cycle is but you can chart it to get a better idea of your body (look up BBT charting). A period can be upto 7days 'late' and not be considered 'late' in doc terms. What IS important is the time between ovulating and your period. It should be between 12-14 days, although 10 is 'passable'. Mine is stuck on 7-8.
Therefore say you ovulate on day 16 of your cycle...and period comes 14 days later, that makes your cycle length 30 days. But next cycle you might ovulate on day 20 and, with 14 day LP, make your cycle 34 days. Or you might ovulate on day 10! So you see, it can vary alot but still be fine for concieving. If however you ovulate day 20 but get your period on day 28 then you look like you have a 'normal' 28 day cycle but wouldn't be able to concieve....
Sorry if thats confusing! But basically charting is a great way of getting more info for yourself! Then, if there is a problem, you can tell the doc with some real facts.

Hi. Im Jolene. 31 years old. I suffered three years of a short luteal phase and didnt think I could get pregnant again without medical assistance but fell pregnant by accident and naturally. I am really happy and excited to be having a baby although knowing Im going it alone this time is a bit daunting and scary!
