When is the best time for R&R? Holidays? Birthdays?

Do you think it is best to take R&R before/at about/or after 6 months?

I was thinking he should do it for DS 3rd birthday, that is 8 months into it though. wdyt?

I think eight months would be perfect - then you'd be well over half-way through when he went back and it wouldn't be quite so hard to say goodbye again.

DH got stuck with the first slot which was only about 3 months in and it sucked. We were hoping for a later date, like 7-8 months in would have been ideal for us.

ETA: DH was home for Christmas which was nice!

hubby did it at the 6 month mark the 1st deployment..that wasn't to bad, but he took it after 3 months this time and that really stunk cause now we are going 9 months without seeing each other or the kids seeing him...so never ever again...I like the 7-8 month mark.
