Which program do you use, Sarah? It's different for each one.

I found this from the old boards, not sure if it will help: Animation in PSE 5 - Justmommies Forums

Basically, if I remember correctly from the brief time I had PSE, the trick is that you have to make it so that each of your layers is like a different frame of your animation. So, to take a very simple example, say that you want to just one cluster frame that flips between two different photos. So, you would set up all of your elements, text, and everything in the siggy the way you want it, merge it all, and then duplicate it. In one layer you would add the first photo to the frame, and in the other layer you would add the second photo. Then merge each of those so that you end up with just two layers that are basically two versions of the exact same siggy, except with a different photo in each. Next, you would click on "Save for Web and Devices." Change it to GIF instead of JPEG. Then set the animation speed (how long you want each frame to show, whether it be 1 sec, 0.5 sec, or what have you). Then, adjust the photo quality so that you are under the 250 KB limit. Then save it, and you're all set!

Hope that helps some! If you give it a try then please post what you come up with here, I'd love to see it.

Hi. I use PSE too and I was trying to do this. When I made my siggy like I wanted (minus the thing I want to animate) and I merged the layers and then made a duplicate so I had two identical siggies (minus the object to animate) but then I tried puting the object in one spot on the first siggy thinking i'd put it in a different spot on the other one right? But whatever I did to the first one automatically appeared on the other one. So they stayed identical no matter what I did. What am I missing??

Joni, make sure you turn off the layer you don't want showing in the second frame.

^ Thanks! I tried to do that but I can't figure out how to close layers without closing the whole thing Can you tell me exactly what to click on after I have merged and duplicated the layer? Thanks so much!

If you look in your layers palette, on the left of each layer, there is an eye. If you click on that so it doesn't show, it hides that layer.

**you don't have to merge and duplicate the whole siggy to animate; just duplicate the part you want animated. (i.e. the fish in Sarah's siggy)

^ Thanks! Ok I think I've done it, except it won't save right. I duplicated and so I have two siggies "background" and "background copy" and then I clicked the eye so all that's showing is "background" "fairy" and "balloons" and I put the fairy and balloons in position one. Then I click the eyes so all that's showing is "background copy" "fairy copy" and "balloons copy" and I put the fairy and balloons in position 2. Then I merged "background" "fairy" and "balloons" and then merged "background copy" "fairy copy" and "balloons copy" so I end up with two frames, one with the elements in position 1 and the other with the elements in position 2. But then when I click "Save for web" and I change it to Gif, it still only wants to save one of them as just a picture. And I can't change the animation options or anything because it says this is photo 1 of 1. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

When you animate, are you creating two frames?

Um, I don't know! I made the siggie look like this:

Then I merged those layers and it was saved as "Background"

Then I duplicated it so I had "background" and "background copy"

Then I opened 2 new elements "fairy" and "balloons"

Then I duplicated the two elements to make "fairy copy" and "balloons copy"

So I have 6 frames open at that point.

Then I clicked the eye next to all the copies so all that was showing was "background" "fairy" and "balloons" and I made it look like this:

Then I merged those.

Then clicked the eyes so all that was showing was the copies and I put the balloons and fairy in a different position and merged those three.

Then I clicked the eyes so I only have 2 frames total now and one shows the elements in position 1 and one shows them in position 2 but when I go to save, it doesn't do it as an animation

You have to actually have an animation program to do the animation.

Ok so photoshop elements doesn't have an animation program? I thought that's what Sarah had said she was using in the OP
