I am not sure what you mean by simplify a layer? Layers are a little different in PS than they are in PSP. PS is not a vector program so all of the layers are raster. If that is what you are talking about?? I am just not sure.

In PSE I can simplyfy a text layer - so i cant edit it other than to put a stroke around it

You wouldn't happen t know how to set the grid and slices so that it has a full grid? I'm trying to make a blinkie but i can't get it gridded to help me work

You don't need to do that in Photoshop. You can put a stroke around it, bevel it and put a drop shadow on it by going into your blending options. Right click on the text layer and click on blending options and you'll see how to do it.

I don't know how to do this, but I'm sure one of the blinky girls knows.

You can rasterize the text if you want. That will make it so you can't edit it. Go to Layer and then you will see an option that says Rasterize. I will get you screen shots later if you need them. You need to do that to add noise to it or use any of the filters on your text. But if you just want it for adding strokes, you can just add a layer style.

To see the grid go to view, and then show grid. To change the grid go to Edit>> Preferences>>Guides Grids and Slices.

Here is a screen shot. I have Photoshop 6 on my other computer and I just checked it there. They have it in the same place. The only difference is it says "Guides & Grids" instead of guides, grids & slices.

Right click on your brush tool and you'll be able to select the pencil tool.

Did you see SpinkD's first lesson for Photoshop? She does her blinkies an easier way, no grid required. I think it's easier anyway.
