problem erasing in gimp

Hi I was trying to do lesson one to be able to make myself a siggy someday and I cant get the eraser to erase the layer and let the color come through, it just turns white when I erase. Anyone know what Im doing wrong or what I need to try. Thanks

In your layer palette, right click the layer you want to erase, a new menu will appear, click add alpha channel.
