Okay, I've been meaning to write these up for some time. These are the steps I usually take when I photo enhance and I almost always enhance my photos. This tutorial was written for PSP X. I believe the settings are the same or similar for newer versions.
Here's are starting pic
Step 1. Unsharpen mask.
Go to Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharpen mask
Then I usually set my settings to the following 5, 50, and 0. Now some pictures you will need more and some less, but this is where I usually start with and use this setting for most of my pics. This picture I set it at 75 instead of 50.
Step 2. Curves
Go to Adjust > Brightness & Contrast > Curves.
I usually drag at the top right upward like in my picture below. Again you will have to play around with the settings for each photo, but usually I drag upward from the right side.
Step 3. Contrast
Go to Adjust > Brightness & Contrast > Brightness/Contrast
I usually adjust my contrast up anywhere from 4 to 20. I leave the brightness as is.
Step 4. Levels
Go to Adjust > Brightness & Contrast > Levels
Levels, really depends on the picture. I just slide the sliders around until I get it to look right.
Step 4. Color Balance
I don't adjust the color balance on every photo. Probably only about half the time do I mess with this, but if the colors seem off or don't match my other photos I will adjust them. I don't like the color balance in PSP so I use the color red/green/blue instead.
Go to Adjust > Color > Red/Green/Blue
Usually I adjust the reds up and the blues down, but some photos I do the opposite with. You'll have to play around with this and like I said before I only use this maybe half the time.
Step 5. Burn tool
I usually use a soft brush and the burn tool on the lips and colored part of the eyes.
Step 6. Sharpen
Finally, I will usually run the sharpen filter when I'm all done on the whole photo. Be careful with this though sometimes it makes it look worse. If it does just do an edit undo and stop at step 5.
Here's my final pic. This wasn't the best photo for photo enhancing, but got tired of looking through my photos and just picked one.
