My orthopedist just put in orders for me to go have an open MRI out in town. I don't know when I will be going, but I am nervous. They tried to do a regular MRI 6 weeks ago and I had a complete freak out, it turns out I am very claustrophobic(I can feel my nerves getting wired and I am about ready to cry just thinking about it). How big are the open MRI's? Bigger than CT machines? I can handle a CT, but the standard MRI tube was too small.

I've been having major wrist pain for months now and they think it is a torn tendon, but our facilities here cannot perform that kind of surgery so they will have to send me elsewhere, and nowhere will approve my medevac orders until I have an MRI done.

Any input would be much appreciated, I've never seen an open MRI, so I am nervous, plus DH will be deployed and unable to come with me

open MRI that we had was just like a CT for size. I can't do them still though---its the sound that gets me.
Good luck!

Do you think they could give something to calm your nerves?

I have had one! I had one on both my knees and my hip, it's like a big huge table you lie down on and you can have a pillow and stuff. The MRI machine thingie just kind of passes over you, it's like a big arm if I remember correctly, you're not in an enclosed space at all so don't worry!

I freak out too during MRIs, I had to have valium last time I had one at the Army hospital because they only have one of those stupid tube ones

Valium/ativan/high dose of benadryl and if none of those work---the big guns.....Versed (the extra strong margarita drug!)
For me I the first don't work and I am psychotic allergic to versed so I actually have to have general anesthesia for all CT and MRI

Oh, they are planning on giving me valium and vicodin(a combo that relaxes me), but even that isn't enough for the normal MRI. They tried giving me valium and I still got worked up, but the new orthopedist said we'll just get one done in town since there is one there.

Whoa girl valium didn't work !!! I took 1/4 of one once and was very very happy all day lol!!! I wish I knew what it was called maybe Angela knows? But I once had this horrible thing shoved up my pee hole (sorry for my lack of better wording) and It pretty much scared the poop outta me and they injected me with this stuff that relaxes you and also helps you forget. It worked great!! If all else fails do you think they would be willing to put you to sleep? I really hope its like the one Katie described it sounds way less scary then the tube thing!!!

Someone mentiom Versed?! I love Versed!

Open MRI's dont really enclose like regular MRI's do. Its definetly a lot widder and bigger.

as long as it is at least as big as the CT, I can deal with it! I've done CT's before, and while I don't like how close they are, knowing something size is my choice over the regular MRI, I will take it, lol
