So i just started this lovely job of mine (Where I am HAPPY)

I NEED to tell my manager and doctor that I am under going IVF. I cant avoid it. The entire last week in October, i probably won't be able to work (Retrieval on a monday, transfer on a Saturday -- need to be on bedrest and stuff). Which of course that much time off during a new job looks bad, so i need to explain WHY.

Plus, I also want to discuss with them if i DO get pregnant, what precautions i plan on taking such as: wearing my Radiology badge all the time at work, I will set up for x-rays but will not restrain in the room, I will not be touching any cytotoxic drugs, I will not be touching kitty litter (even though i DO have the antibodies for Toxoplasmosis), I will not be restraining any dogs over 40 pounds or nasty cats, I will not be doing any heavy lifting of animals over 20 pounds. I cant think of anything else right now that I need to make changes for at my job. I do plan on being double gloved, etc etc.

Thoughts/Comments how to tell the bosses?

Since you express yourself so well in text form, perhaps write them a concise letter and explain briefly what is in it when you give it to them. Then, they may read it at their leisure and talk with you in depth after that.

I would write a formal letter and give to to your boss then make an appt and go from there. I'm sure they will be very understanding. Its against law to discriminate your situation.
Good luck!

I don't know if I like the ideas of a formal letter. I would suggest a meeting and discussing it with your boss but writing down everything you listed so you don't miss out on anything.

Since your job is pretty new, the situation is a bit ticklish. Is there a HR person that you could discuss the process with before or are there any handbooks or company policies that may speak to something like this?

The US is just a "funny" place when it comes to pregnancy. I've read so much "craziness" that it's kind of hard to say that your boss will be understanding, etc. And in some companies, I think based on the size of so, you don't seem to have much protection from employers.

I wish you all the best in whatever way you choose to tell your boss. Good luck!

Ya I don't suggest a letter either. I think it would be best to set up a time to meet with them personally and alone. Then you can discuss everything and get their opinions and answer any questions they might have right away.

Why do you need days of bedrest afterwards?? I know a woman who all of her children are IVF miracles thanks to the Colmbia University medical team and the most she ever did was rest the day of the procedure - she was back to regular duties (including work) the day after transfer.

Also, something to think about would be to ask the ladies over at TTC w/ MA. I'm sure some of them have been in this situation before and could give loads of great advice!!

You really shouldnt have to be off.. the retrieval part of course you'd be off, but back to work that week and you have the weekend to rest after transfer and should be fine. I'd let them know about precautions only once you confirm pregnancy

I did speak with them today -- pulled them aside everything was great! They were like thank you for telling us and yay! A baby! lol.

My Dr is concerned i will hyperstimulate so he is ordering after the retrieval 3 days bed rest (No working, no housework, etc). After the transfer my protocal says 36 hours of strict bedrest (meaning not on my feet more then 10 minutes). I work Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and since the retrieval should be a monday, and the transfer a saturday, it just makes sense to take the whole week off already.

Thanks though ladies :-)

A friend of mine also had to do a week of bedrest with both of her transfers.

Reason why I say write a letter because it's BLACK AND WHITE than have a meeting and there's hearsay between employer and boss/or HR. Nowadays it's crazy with lawsuits , etc. If you don't write a letter stating why, then the boss can hold it against you and say You never said this and that and ther'd be no proof. I just play safe and learned a hard lesson from my past experience.

Glad to hear you had great meeting. Just be careful. Good luck.
