It IS possible for you to be O.

Interesting.

Both your parents must have had the AO gene and not the AA gene although the A is dominant. You got the recessive gene!

Ditto what Sam said. You have two genes for blood type. If you are AO or AA then you make A protein and are type A. If you are BO or BB then you make B protein and are type B. That is how some people have type AB, they make both the A protein and the B protein. If you are OO, then you are type O and don't make A or B protein.

In your case, Dad must have had AO and Mom had AO as well. They can each only pass on one set of chromosomes, so only one of the genes. So if they both pass on their O gene, you end up as OO, blood type O.

Yeah what Shannon said. My dad is o, my mom is A and when tested I show as an A but I'm really an AO because that is the only way I can be and test as an A. Dh is an A but I'm not sure if he is an AO or not, but I think I remember they tested Brayden and he is an A as well.

And if you have AB blood and you so has AO then your children can be either:

AA
AO
AB
BO

Each child would have a25% chance of each type.

I'm A+ as well. Dh is O+. I tested his blood myself when I was a student learning how to do it. I SO wish I could work in a blood bank lab. There's lots more to it than just the main blood types and it's fascinating. Or else me = nerd.
