A water sonogram AKA SHG, is where they put sterile saline into your uterus which expands the walls and the saline flows in. What happens is since the walls are opened, the saline ends up shaping around any possible polyps that can be inside that are NOT seen by u/s regularly. Polyps cause very very painful AFs because your uterine linning sheds around them each month, thus making them bigger. The bigger they are the more painful your AF is going to be. My AFs have been getting more and more painful the last 3-4 years. I complained to my GYN and she did a regular u/s and said she didnt see anything suspicious (of course she didnt cause the walls of the uterus close in on the polyps!) When my RE did the water sono he found a giant polyps, and when he did the D&C and got inside he found tons of smaller polyps.
My recent AF after the D&C was BLISS. Instead of 40 advil in 2 days i took 6. It was amazing.
The dye just tells them if your tubes are open and flowing properly. The SHG will make sure nothing out of the ordinary is inside your uterus.
I recommend the SHG. It was relativly painless, for me i felt a little crampy when they inserted the catheter into my cervix/uterus but that was it. Definetly ask for it. Its a great way to know if theres any polyps or not and your AFs sound just like mine did.
