Not to cause a debate or anything, but there is a political ad running on the radio now that I need some help with. The ad script is (as I recall)

*sound of wooshing* "Hear that? That's the sound of my baby's heartbeat at ten weeks. She doesn't have a voice this election, that's why I'm only voting for pro-life candidates..."

1st question: Can you hear a baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks? Didn't think so. 2nd question: Gender? At 10 weeks? Nope, didn't think so either. 3rd question: aren't there much more pressing issues than the pro-life/pro-choice debate, espically since it's the law and would take an overturning at the supreme court level to change that law!

This is ridiculous, right? Every time I hear it, I want to shove the cooter cam up something--err, maybe not

Well I'll be devil's advocate here...

1. Actually we heard the baby's heartbeat at my 7w4d ultrasound. My RE flipped a switch while doing the ultrasound and we could hear it.
2. No you can't tell the gender at 10 weeks. But the baby does have a gender (you just can't tell yet) and obviously they aren't going to say "it" on the commercial.
3. I'd say there are lots of important issues, pro-life/pro-choice is one of many.

*backs away slowly*

Heartbeat can be heard in 6-7 weeks via ultrasound. sex COULD be determined by genetic testing at conception (far stretch but Its possible--hardly anyone does it though)
Issues in politics.....everyone has the thing they will fight for ....and for some this topic is it.

I have to admit---being overseas during an election and NOT having all the commercials---is really great! I hate the commercials.

I'm agreeing with Shannon. I also think it's more to do with the fact that the baby DOES have a heart beat, the baby sex IS determined already at 10 weeks, whether we know it or not.

And for a pro lifer voting for someone who is pro choice may not be something they want to have ANY part of. For sure a VERY important issue!

I heard Aden's heartbeat at 10 weeks via ultrasound, and saw her swimming around happily kicking her little legs and waving her arms. The pictures are really cute I'm pretty sure some people have heard the hb via doppler as well, although usually they don't do that until 12 weeks.

Sex is determined at conception, so while you may not be able to tell by looking, that baby is officially a boy or a girl.

You can hear at 10 weeks. I did this time around, via dopler at my OB's office. Also at 7weeks we herd it via u/s.
