My OB called today and said my Pap came back abnormal. Apparently, I tested positive for HPV.
At first I was just shocked that I had an STD, but then she said how common it was. Like 8 out of 10 women have it. I've always had normal paps and this really scared me, like why haven't they noticed before? It can be dormant for years, even 20-30 years for some women. She said that being pregnant has changed my cells in my cervix so now it's active. Anyways, I have to do a screening next week to see where the infected cells are located. And then basically wait. They can't do anything else until the baby is born, then possible a biopsy.
The OB tried to reassure me most likely the baby and I will be fine. She also said alot of other OBs in my county have been taken to court because they fail to mention EVERY thing that pertains to HPV. So of course I understand they have to tell me everything even if it's truly scary. She has tons of patients in my same boat and thinks it most likely will be nothing.
But STILL, I'm freaked I'm already worried about so much crap, and NOW I'm worried about this! Supposedly there is no significant link of miscarriage or stillborn associated with HPV and pregnancy. How am I suppose to chill out?

I wouldn't worry about it too much at all, just do the necessary check ups and appts. Of course, I am HPV positive and have had a while to deal with it so it is easy for me to tell you it is not a huge deal (although it is very important to track and treat). Below is a link to an HPV thread in the private forum where me and some others go through the whole HPV thang. IT is extremely common, and it is extremely common for it to show up in preggos.

I too have been HPV positive since 2005. Ive had 2 normal paps after a bunch of abnormal ones, along with 3 normal biopsies. I have both 16 AND 18. The 2 most dangerous and common.
You will be fine!! The baby will be fine! When you go in for your 6 week PP check up, they will probably do biopsies which also dont hurt. Feels like a pap. Chances are if you have always been normal, this is nothing serious or anything cancerous. It would be very odd for some high grade changes to show up overnight. If you've never had any issues, chances are the cells were probably ASCUS cells.
I have been warned by my RE that once I get pregnant my HPV is going to come back. Its normal :-) Lots of women here have HPV. Heres 3 so far!

I'm sorry, Morgan. I know it's hard not to worry about everything your dr. tells you. But it does sound like you and bean will be just fine. (((HUGS)))

Sorry. I wish I could comment more than that but to be honest, I know nothing about it.

My mum had exactly the same thing happen to her - she tested positive when she fell pregnant with me. But after I was born, she was tested again and came back negative! You'll be fine!
I've also had a leeps operation (think it's called that) to remove some of the cells on my cervix that could have turned cancerous in 10 - 15 years and now everything is sweet!

(((((((((((((huggles))))))))))))) I can't offer anything other than huggles, as I don't know anything about it. Altho I know what it can lead to as the UK have had a HUGE advertising campaign about it recently. But that's as far as my knowledge goes. It sounds like it's highly common as per the replies above though, which... hope this reads better than it sounds.... is reassuring, KWIM?
Worries me a little as they don't test us UKers during pregnancy. It makes me think I'll ask for a routine test after bubbs is born, just to chec things out.

If it did cause issues WE WOULD KNOW about it since 8 out of 10 women have it! But finding out you have it sucks and I'm sure finding out while preggers sucks more {{{{{{{HUGGLES}}}}}}}}

That's a great link, Michelle!
Thank you so much for sharing your situations. My head says things are fine, but the hormonal pregnant woman wants to weep for days.

I found out I was HPV positive when I went for my pap during my first appointment with Emma. They did testing on cells once every trimester and once at my 6week post checkup...When I went for my annual exam in March, I asked about it and she said she would call me either way, positive or negative, and my test came back negative. So, Keep that in mind - I was in the same situation as you and everything cleared itself up Hang in there!!

 I found out I was HPV positive about a year ago I think.. it is a lot to swallow when you first find out, but it is soooo common.. I had the HPV vaccine around the same time I found out.. when I went back 6 months later my tests all came back negative! good luck!

FYI-- you may want to look into it more before you jump at it...they are coming out with some bad side effects now in some of the studies....its to early to tell if they are true or not--but its far enough to know there are some concerns at least.
