I just got back from my second ultrasound. The gestational sac was irregular shaped, and a large yolk sac could be seen with no fetal pole. According to the OB, it was classic textbook blighted ovum. Basically it's a pregnancy where an egg gets fertilized, a sac develops and starts producing hCG, giving the exact symptoms of early pregnancy, but NO BABY EVER DEVELOPS. Here's more info about this super fun situation for those who aren't familiar:
Wikipedia - Blighted Ovum
The OB offered a D&C but I am not sure if that's the path I want to take. There is a pill you can take to induce a miscarriage, which carries some risk of complications like hemorrhaging. Then again, a D&C is full on surgery with anasthesia which carries risks of its own. I've never, ever had any kind of surgery before so I am very scared.
Then they want us to wait 2 full cycles before TTC again, which ticks me off because I feel like we're just losing time. I feel like this stroke of crappy luck is putting us back months and months. It's not enough that we have to tell everyone on earth to forget about their grandchild/niece/nephew. We also have to go back to condoms and let more, possibly good eggs pass us by.
This is miserable, plain and simple.
If anyone has been through this, can you offer any advice about the D&C versus the methotrexate pill? Keep in mind I'll be 7 weeks tomorrow and I am leaving the country for a week long vacation in Jamaica on the 24th, so I want everything done and over with by then, if possible. TIA.

Oh Kyle I'm so sorry hun! I'll be keeping you in my prayers. As for the blighted ovum, I have a friend that had 3 in a row. She took the pill for the first 2 and had a D&C for her 3rd. She was a coworker and was furious with me because I was pregnant and she wasn't so she wouldn't talk to me. I wish I could be of more help to you. Hugs again!

I've never done the methotrexate pills before but I can tell you that when I had a D&C vs the two natural miscarriages that the D&C was over much quicker. Physically I felt much better and recuperated faster, obviously emotionally it was still very hard. When I had my D&C I'd at that point never had any type of surgery before and was scared, along with all of the other dizzying emotions. My OB wrote me a 'script for Valium to help calm my nerves and that was a godsend. Maybe ask if yours would do the same?
I'm sorry, sweetie. I know this is really hard and there is going to be a lot of pain and frustration in the coming days and weeks. If you need anything or would like to ask me any other questions about my experiences with D&C (though I know Angela is also a good resource), please do not hesitate to PM me. *hugs*

I'm really sorry that this has happened. I can't really speak to the D&C or the pill in detail but I'd say that if the natural way doesn't happen in a day or 2 then you should perhaps consider the D&C since you'll be travelling pretty soon.

I'm so sorry Kyle Nature sure does suck sometimes It makes me angry that things like this happen, and I'm especially upset that it happened to you. I pray that you are able to make it though this with as much strength as possible and I know that someday SOON, you and Eric will make amazing parents. I know its frustrating for you to have to wait and it feels like an eternity. I hope that time goes by quickly so that you can enjoy your healthy BFP, your pregnancy, and your sweet baby.

I am so sorry Kyle. I had a natural m/c so I'm no help there, but you might ask on the Pregnancy Loss board. I think I've known a couple women who tried the pills and they ended up having to have a D&C anyway. That may not be the "norm" though.
As far as waiting to try...I'm not going to tell you to go against your doctor BUT in my personal opinion, waiting 1 cycle is fine. Do what you and Dh feel is right and is best for you.
I am so sorry this happened to you.

I'm so sorry. I'd probably go with the D&C if you want things to be over with quickly. A natural m/c is not quick at all.

I'm so sorry
I'd go with the D&C although I have no experience with that. I just know that a natural m/c takes alot longer.

That sucks big time. Also not to argue with your doctor but once your body's hormones are back to normal (i'm told 4-6 weeks, earlier the loss the quicker the recovery i'm told) you should be able to TTC again. And I guess using condoms is kind of a mute points since your body has hCG in it and thinks its pregnant-it will not release eggs to fertilize. We are just DTD like normal with no condoms--if I O then we may catch some and thats great. My doctor said 1 month (or after one AF). I hear from 1-6months from what women say their doctors told them.
Natural miscarriages can take weeks (i had bleeding/spotting for almost two months). With the pill (which is Cytotec-yes the same one they give to help start labor at the end of pregnancy) most women are done in 3-4 days.. The D&C, I know I was scared of having one but really its now my preferred choice. Its quick and simple and over in no time, I had a couple days spotting and no pain to speak of and back to normal in no time. First time being put under can be scary but they use really low doses for this procedure so it would be the safest first time you can get. I personally (knowing what I know now) would go with the D&C every time....its done and over and your not reminded of it for days/weeks/months. And in my mind confirms my "medical event" with a medical procedure way of coping (so yeah for me I would do the surgery to help me cope---I don't recommend that).
What I recommend--take the cytotec it should do the job and your done in three-four days (over 90% chance that its done), if your in the 10% group then do the D&C after those days. This way your not bleeding for weeks, but your avoiding surgery (if you needed a D&C after the meds, you would have most likely needed anyway because you have an area that is very attached).
 for you and Eric!
