If I'm allergic to penicillin & sulfa drugs, and I have had problems with erythromycin (sp?), what are my other options? JW because I'm having surgery in 2 months. I wasn't diagnosed with the allergies until I was 26 years old, and I haven't needed antibiotics since. (Well, I did have a tooth pulled a few years ago, but the surgeon opted not to give me any antibiotics because he was worried I'd react to something. However, this was an oral surgeon, not a dr. so...)

Cephalosporin family may be a good option. Have you tried those?

No offense to the nurses on here. But if you want the best advice on medications.. Ask a Pharmacist , they are the experts when it comes to drugs.. Just call any out patient pharmacy or you can even call a Clinical Pharmacist at your local hospital.

That would be in the erythromycin family, though.

Nope, I'm pretty sure I haven't had those drugs. I know it's been years since I was diagnosed w/ the medical allergies, but I really haven't needed antibiotics since then. I don't usually get sick, and I haven't had any type of infection in ages. Maybe that's what my doc will give me, then.
Thanks for all the responses, girls.

Well not all antibiotics due the same thing. It would depend on what you needed it for. Just because you have surgery doesn't mean we put you on an antibiotic. ANd big ditto to the pharmacist comment! those guys know more then the doctor or nurses on the chemical make up of drugs!!!!

lol. It's not like an antibiotic is something she can just go down & pick up. She needs a dr's prescription. She was just curious, sheesh.

If she has questions about any kind of medications or allergies, she can always contact a Pharmacist. . She doesn't need a prescription for that..

I *think* doxycycline is safe for penacillin allergies (double check with your doctor). I know for a fact there is no sulfer in it (i am big on reading the chemical formulas of drugs before i take them) and i know its in the tetracycline family. I took this for IVF after my invasive procedures -- i didnt give me any problems other then made me nauseas after an hour of taking it.

I'm just asking out of curiosity, girls. It's just that I was wondering about this the other day, and I don't see my dr. again till next week. A girl on one of my other boards had told me what she was prescribed in place of penicillin, but she doesn't really come around any more, and that was years ago so I felt that looking for that post was a bit daunting.
Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I realize that. I was just pointing out that there really isn't any harm in her getting info from us because it's not like she can actually DO anything with the info we give her. She needs a dr.s prescription to get an antibiotic, she's can't just run out and buy one just because we tell her the different types that there are (not that she would--she's quite intelligent!).
