I don't know what it is, but every, single time I've seen a female OB, whether with this pregnancy or Lily's, they ALWAYS hassle me about my weight.

Today this OB told me that since I was 10 - 15 pounds over my goal weight before I got pregnant, I really should not gain anything this pregnancy. At most, I should only have gained 5 - 10 pounds, MAX. According to her, I should weigh between 135 and 140 when not pregnant and since I weighed 150, this means I should weigh between 150 - 160 when I deliver. Well, I'm 34 weeks and I've gained 20 pounds so far and she says to me, "You need to think about that every time you pick up a fork from now until delivery."

I am so pissed. This woman was about as big around as my pinky, freakin' finger and I'm sure has never struggled with her weight. She has no boobs, no hips, no butt and I'm sorry, but I will NEVER be like that - God made me with curves. I hate that I didn't say anything to her, I'm usually much better about sticking up for myself but my weight is just such a soft, sore spot for me. All I could do was just sit there, feeling awful, and allowing her to keep going.

But seriously, how exactly am I supposed to grow an entire child and NOT gain any weight? It just sounds so unrealistic and unhealthy to me.

WAAAA! She is crazy!

Her 'thinking' is that since you started 10-15 lbs above ideal weight you'd lose that weight while gaining baby weight, ending to be net even or 10-15 lbs over pre preg weight.

HOWEVER....you never looked a bit overweight to me. Those stupid weight charts are just vague guidlines. Dont worry about your weight. As long as you and baby is healthy and you arent gorging yourself on chocolate cake for 3 meals a day...forget her.

Puh-lease! Stick insects (meaning thin women of course) don't get preggers. In fact, if you're too skinny, you might not get your period at all! So poo poo to them! As long as you don't have any medical issues, you should be fine! Women carry their babies all sorts of ways!

I think as long as you listen to your body (like you're not huffing and puffing while going up a few stairs, etc), and you and baby are healthy you should be fine. And not to mention beautiful too!

I also want to say: doctors in general are often out of touch, but we notice it more with the women drs. because we naturally assume women to be above the influence of all that stuff--

I think it's all those years of school, living in high stress dorms, basically surrounded with people too smart for their own good under constant stress and no proper socialization for years and years. It stunts their ability to relate to real down-to-earth folk! Right?!

***? I for one think you look AWESOME!! I weighed 150 before I got preggo and gained waaaaay more than you (at least 50 lbs) and nobody ever said anything to me!! I think she was totally rude and out of line. 20 lbs is nothing! Way less than most women gain! She's probably jealous of your sexy preggo bod

ITA about female OBs too, I would soo much rather have a dude. Just like if I was gonna get a massage I would want a guy to do it, and if I'm gonna have someone look at my vajayjay same thing ya know?

I'm sorry she was rude to you, but she is just showing some concern for you.

Where does she get off making those comments to you? I think that she was extremely rude and insensitive. Her comments are extremely hurtful and she had no right to say those things to you. Her comments seem more targetted toward making you feel bad than about the health of you and your baby. That really sucks!!! I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

I'm sorry she said that Kate! You are a SMOKING hot MILF and maybe your doctor is dyslexic, or perhaps like Carolyn suggested, prefers ANORexics?

But I have to disagree. I'd much rather have a female gyno 100%

Thank you so much for all of your support, girls. It has really helped me feel better.

The more I've thought about her comments, the more ridiculous the whole thing seems to me. To begin with, I'm 5'8" so weighing 150lbs is TOTALLY within my normal BMI range. Second, even women who ARE considered overweight in terms of BMI, are still told to gain weight, just generally less, so I don't see where she gets the idea that a woman who was in a normal BMI range prior to pregnancy shouldn't gain ANYTHING.

Yes, I was 10 - 15 pounds over my goal weight, but I'm not sure how realistic 135 lbs is for me at 5'8" when you consider that I have D-cup size breasts, hips, and a tush. In order for me to be 135 lbs, I would basically be a giant pair of boobs attached to a stick and I can't see how that would be considered "healthy". Isn't that why we have a RANGE anyway? Not everyone fits a predetermined mold.

My final issue here is that ok, let's say that she was giving me sound medical advice - THIS is her presentation? Especially when talking about weight to a patient, delivery is everything. I'm not asking for her to blow sunshine up my skirt, but sheesh, can't I get a little more tact than, "You need to think about that every time you pick up a fork from now until delivery"?? I am 34 weeks pregnant for crap's sake, I already feel like a big pile of unattractive, unsexy, swollen pregginess, thankyouverymuch.

There are three more OBs I need to see in the practice before I've seen them all - and two of them are women. Wish me luck.

You are absolutely right!! I hope that at least one of the other OBGYNs will turn out to be a good one. Good luck!

That is insane! I've seen pictures of you and you look thin to me!

I too am 5'8 and hover between 146-155. It's almost impossible for me to weigh less than that, and my cycle alone makes my weight fluxuate 10 lbs. I would expect to gain ALOT more weight if pregnant.

Your doc is coocoo!

Well I'm only 5'5'' and weigh 135....my ideal weight is 125. However, I dont think I'm fat at all...nor do I have any intention to lose weight. When I was in my course and super stressed, I lost about 5 or so lbs and I looked unhealthy. I have a girlfriend that is 5'8'' and 135....and yep...she is a stick with giant boonbs!! But that is just her shape and it works great for her. It's all about how you carry it. I bet that lady didnt have any kids.

I also have not have good experiences with female OBs. BUT I've loved all the female Nurse Practioners I've seen. They tend to be more tactful and genuine. They are all I see now.

I think 150 is probably just perfect for you! I'm an inch shorter than you and I would be ecstatic if I wa 150! D cup here as well....

I don't think she was showing concern, I think she was just plain rude! At least you have time to think of a witty comeback if you get unlucky enough to see her next time

She sounds like a nutcase. Everyone is right, you are a MILF. and overweight would never even cross my mind with you. And I agree, the way she told you was just awful. People like that are just unhappy with themselves.

And I know what you mean about having a different then usual reaction. I usually yell at jerks, but these days I just wanna cry. Ugh, I hate it. Be sure to tell that B off if she mentions it again. Or maybe get a male doc. I loved my male RE. I mean, I have said it before and I will say it again, to be a male ob you have gotta like va-jay-jays a lot, and that is always a good thing!

Fortunately, she's not my OB. She's just an OB in my regular OB's practice and I'm having an appt with all of the different docs so that I've met them all at least once before I deliver. Which, evidently, that really pissed her off, too. She asked me why I was seeing her today instead of my regular guy and when I explained, she said, "Well, you're just taking up space on my schedule when I could have seen one of my OWN patients." Thanks, lady. ALL of the other OBs I've seen so far have said they think what I'm doing is a great idea and frankly, every other OB/GYN practice I've ever gone to does this anyway.

Clearly her panties were all in a wad today, hopefully I don't run into her again!
