Tonight at parent class, the midwife talked about the positions of baby in the womb. She said the the best position for baby is it's back to our front. And if it's back to our back it can prolong labour.

I know mine is laying with it's back down my right side, looking over to my left side... is that ok? Does it turn during labour in order to fit through the birth canal? Or will it fit through sidey-ways?

The baby should turn during labor. As long as he/she is head down, you should be fine!

Yup, baby should turn. That's how Lochy always was inside me too and my labor was not prolonged by any means (I went from 5 1/2 cm when my water broke to him in my arms in 50 minutes!--total labor time 6 hours 20 mintes!). It was actually pretty funny when he was being born because he was crowned and had the top part of his head exposed while I was waiting for the next contraction to push his head all the way out but he kept turning his head back and forth (kinda like a cork screw) trying to push his way out! We all got a little laugh out of that! LOL

I'm not to sure about Curtis, but Dustin had his backside along my left side of my tummy. He was a very short labor and did all the turning during that time. No worries, baby's and our bodies are made to birth

The baby is in an ideal position if it's back it to your front or if it's back is to either side as it is easier for it to turn in labour. My baby's back is to my back and it can mean a longer labour as well as back labour but a baby in this position can also turn once labour begins.

Head down is the most important thing!!!

Thanks Fi. I was a bit nervous when I first found out she was posterior but I've let those feelings go and I've been reading stories about successful natural deliveries of posterior babies and I feel like I'll be alright regardless.

Head down is the big thing. And back to back CAN slow things down, but I have seen those babies come just as quickly as the others. And yep they can do all sorts of twists when in labor and heck even WHILE pushing. Those babies are smart and they will move to the path of least resistance many times---you know they are excited to meet you also!

I personally think if the baby is engaged head down in the birth canal is the best position.. When I had Adriana, she was head down, but not engaged.. I was induced at 39 weeks due to have gestational diabetes and my labor lasted 32 hours. I was just about to go to the OR when my water broke on it's own. They can't brake the water if your baby is still floating around..
