So "they" are now saying that out weight gain is to much during pregnancy. Tons of research on fetal side effects with the extra weight has caused to many issues so they are changing the recommendations based on the research.....
These are for HEALTHY pregnancy/moms only -not ones with medical issues.

STARTING BMI........What the new recommendation will be-----------what the current/soon to be old one is (so you can compare).

BMI of less then 19.8 (low) .....gain 9-22 lbs -----------------(currently its 8-40lbs)
19.8-26 (normal) ...................gain 5-22lbs ------------------(currently 25-35lbs)
26.1-29.9 (overweight).......... gain under 20----------------- (currently 15-25lbs)
30-35 (obese) .......................gain under 13lbs-------------- (currently 15lbs max gain for anyone over 30 BMI)
35.1-39.9 (class 2 obesity)..... gain 0-9lbs --------------------(currently don't have a recommendation)
40+(class 3 obesity) ..............lose 0-9 lbs--------------------(currently don't have recommendation)

So my starting weight was 148lbs (puts me in the normal wt group for my ht)...this means my goal weight should be 153-170lbs for this pregnancy per the new rules instead of 173-183lbs per the old/current rules....well guess we will see how well that works out for me. I think the fact I lost 8lbs to start MAY help LOL.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHARE IF YOU DON'T WANT--I realize Wt is a sensitive topic. I'm just wondering the IRL aspects of this. My girlfriends all got WAY big during their pregnancies (like 50+lbs with their kids, my BFF is 5'0' and put on 68lbs!)

For the BTDT moms--where you able to stay in the CURRENT wt gain limits?
Would you have been in the new wt gain limits?
If not did you have any medical issues or baby issues?
For preggers--do you think you will stay in the current limits? How about the new limits?

I am of the philosophy that I will gain what I need to gain. I was underweight when I got pregnant with Liam and gained 44lbs. I was "normal" weight when I got pregnant with Lochlann and gained 14lbs. Liam weighed 7lbs 5oz and was born at 37 weeks. Lochlann weighed 8lbs 5oz and was born at 40 weeks exactly. So my weight gain had no affect on the weight/health of either of my boys. I think this new weight gain stuff is just another way to make women feel bad about themselves. I'd hate to see women limit their food intake just so they don't gain "too much weight" and have babies suffer because of it.

Good thing I only gained 9lbs with Seamus and nothing this time. I guess us fat gals dont need to gain anything but baby weight/placenta and water or they're trying for really small babies, if they want some other weight added. But Seamus was 7lbs 9oz so almost all of that 9lbs I gained was him.

Wow, those are some small limits! I've gained 15 pounds so far and have people telling me that I am small and need to eat more. Like Jenn, I just follow my own hunger pattern and trust that my body will gain what it needs to. I was underweight to start and it doesn't bother me if I go over the 22 lb "limit". I will, if I keep gaining about a pound a week.

The goal is still a healthy wt baby, low wt babies are worse off health wise then high wt babies.

I really wish they would push education on healthier eating/activity...then just wt--I think the wt gets people all nervous and weird (because they just watch that number and thin doesn't equal healthy). I wish we had a blood test for healthy eating! (lord knows I would get chewed out by my m/w though if they did )

I'm a huge believer in just listening to my body. I eat when I'm hungry, now if I could just listen better to my body when it tells me what to eat! I really wish i had a nutritionist to meet with during pregnancy.... I mean I KNOW what should/shouldn't be eating but I suck at doing it....maybe if I had a little coach keeping me honest I would be better at it.

Um according to this chart - I think Im obese. and it says 15-25lbs. Um......ok......we all new I gained a *few* pounds more than I should have when I was pregnant with Ian. And with my 2nd pregnancy, I was......probably Obese 2, and I didnt gain anything....only gained back when I dropped with my morning sickness.

But like others, Im more for what you feel comfy with gaining, not what dr's tell you to stop at. I think dr's need to chill and let us do our jobs

Wow, that's a bit crazy. I gained 20 lbs. w/ Abby and I was in the low. I'd say I was in the normal range when I got preggers w/ Joshua, and I've gained 14 lbs. so far at 30.5 weeks. I just asked my dr. today about my weight gain, but he said it's good & that if I gain around 25 that should be fine. (I think I was told around 20 last time w/ a different dr. & I was a lot skinnier then!) I am finally starting to feel comfortable w/ my body and the weight, etc. so it was good that my dr. was okay w/ everything.

HAHAHA! Yeah right dude...no way is that realistic! At least for me....and pretty much everyone else I know IRL.

With Aden I was about 20 lbs overweight to start with, and I gained 50. I lost it all though (70 lbs) in about 10 or 11 months.

With Phin I was at my ideal weight and I STILL gained 50 lbs...actually maybe more than that who the heck knows because I stopped weighing myself, and I've lost a good bit of it already. I don't think it will take me much longer to lose the 20 lbs or so I need to get back to my ideal weight.

I didn't eat any differently than I did before I got pregnant, except that maybe I was hungry more often. But my body just seems to hoard fat, I don't know...there's nothing else I can do about it! I was even exercising regularily up until I got put on bedrest! I doubt I would have gained under 25 lbs even if I had been eating carrots and tofu.

I'm pretty small so I didn't gain that much weight even though I had medical issues with DS and have many medical issues this time. I was in the normal BMI range with DS and I gained 16 pounds - so I met the current and new recommendations. I am in the low BMI range this time and so far I have gained 3 pounds....I'll probably no gain that much this time either b/c I am on such a strict diet with the diabetes. I never tried to only gain a certain amount of weight or not and don't really think about it when I'm pregnant so its not a big deal to me.

When I got pregnant with Ben, my BMI technically put me in the obese category (though I in no way feel obese!), and I gained 26lbs. He was healthy and weighed 7lb 6.5oz at birth, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes though I was extremely borderline (aside from the GTT itself, I NEVER had an abnormal blood sugar reading that I couldn't explain, and even then I only had maybe 3 total - none fasting).

I gained 29lbs total with Taylor and I was in the normal catergory. I had no problems with her or her delivery. I started this pregnancy out in the normal catergory again and I've gained 13lbs so far but I still have about 8 weeks to go

I only gained 5 lbs when I was pregnant with Adriana and I lost it all and then some when I had her and she was only 6 lbs 15 oz's.. I'm however am slightly on the "fluffy" side and I had problems gaining weight throughout my pregnancy.. Which I didn't mind at all.. lol I did have gestatinal diabetes and the diet kept the weight off during my last trimester..

I believe you can not gain that much weight when your pregnant.. Just watch what you eat.. Eat mostly protein and less carbs.. Kinda like the gestational diabetes diet.. Most people look at the diet as depriving yourself with nutrients, but it's the opposite.. It MAKES you eat right ..

P.S. Angela, how do you like the Philippines? I have family in Manila and Ilo Ilo.. I've only been there once and I loved it..

Not really sure what I think yet. I have been so tired I haven't done much out of the hotel. I THINK my energy is starting to come back some though! I am at least getting moments of energy now. This weekend we are going to Subic for the weekend (not sure whats there yet LOL). I think we are going to go to Manila for Valentines day weekend-----you should totally jump on a plane and visit!!!!

Oh and where can I find info on the diabetic diet for pregnancy? (don't have it just wondering what the latest and greatest recommendation for it is!)

Subic bay is where the military base use to be.. I've been there, but only for a few hours.. You'll like Manila.. Lots of things to do, but be careful what you eat there.. you know what I mean.. Try Pancit, lumpia, and sho pau (sp?).. That's all I ate when I was there.. I'm not into foreign foods. I would love to come visit but I'm saving up my vacation time right now for my next pregnancy.. Just be careful when your there, there are Alcadi (sp?) members there.. When I was in the Navy I wanted to visit, but it was restricted for while.. I don't know how it is now, but just be safe..

I was right in the middle of "normal" before I got pregnant and if you go by the old standards, I stayed within range of a "healthy" pregnancy. I blew the range out of the water if you go by the new ones I'm really not worried about it though. Conner is fine, I am fine, and weight is something you can always lose later on.

This is a hard issue, for sure! The new recommendations are very small! Will this make a dr say to her patient halfway through the pregnancy to not gain any more weight? Will that patient in turn starve herself to "make weight" and the baby suffers or will she defy her dr and eat healthy and not worry about the number on the scale?

The thing with the number is that neither the health of the baby nor the mother are considered!

I certainly don't think gaining 5 pounds only is going to be "normal" for me! I'm in the normal range now and can see me gaining 30 pounds easily--but I will try to focus on eating healthy, of course! It's just my body gains weight very easily--and lets go of it most difficultly!

Ah well, at my rate I won't have to worry about this for a while!!

Pfft im only "alllowed" 10 more pounds? Hahahahaha yeah, OK. I dont think thats realistic because with all the extra weight from baby and water and blood and boobs its already 15-20 pounds. So then where do those extra 300 calories go that we take in everyday? Yeah.... im not going with that at all.

My pre-pregnancy weight was 117 lbs. My think my BMI was 21-23. I weighed around 160-165 before I had him! I went over. I wanted to only gain 25-35 tops but it just didn't happen. I'm down to 124-126 right now. That is without trying to lose weight.

For the BTDT moms--where you able to stay in the CURRENT wt gain limits? The Current...yes, I gained 27lbs so I was on the lower end of the 25-35lbs...
Would you have been in the new wt gain limits? Nope, it says 5-22lbs and I gained 5lbs more than that limit...
If not did you have any medical issues or baby issues? We had no issues and I was back to my prepregnancy size by 4 months post...
For preggers--do you think you will stay in the current limits? How about the new limits? I think I will stay in the current but I doubt I will stay in the new. I expect to gain about the same amount as I did with Emma. So far (I weighed 122lbs in September before I got pregnant and weighed 127lbs at 4 weeks) Since my 4 week appointment, I've gained 4lbs. I am going by the 122 so I've gained 9lbs already and I'm only 18 weeks. We'll see how big I get this time around...

With my first pregnancy, I was way outside the guidelines no matter which set you look at. I gained 55 pounds and it was definitely tough! I was constantly out of breath and just flat out swollen and miserable at the end. Lily, however, did not have any medical issues and it took me about nine months to shed all of my pregnancy weight.

With this pregnancy, my current weight gain is 18 pounds (I actually LOST 2 pounds since my appt last week) which is well within the old guidelines. I'm thinking I'll be pretty close to within the new guidelines when I have the baby, but we'll see. I can say that I feel much healthier this time around and am able to be up and doing a LOT more - which is good when you also have a toddler!
