I just got the bill from the "ER visit" when I was having my m/c. It was $1000!!!!!! All due from me, my insurance paid NOTHING because it wasnt billed as an ER visit because I was pregnant. (The hospital told me that is the law, when your pregnant you dont go to the regular ER you go to the womens evaluation unit) So it was billed as "observation" not an ER visit. Well, what makes me mad is I wasnt "observed" they came in took my blood, got really busy, came back 3+hours later to tell me I miscarried. The bulk of my bill is for the 3+hours of "observation"!!!!! I sat ALONE in the room for those 3+ hours NO ONE came in to check on me not even once, why should I have to pay for sitting there? Is not like I wanted to be there. On top of everything this has rehashed all of my sadness about my m/c. The insurance lady kept saying "your miscarriage this your miscarriage that" "The state you were in when you came in". UGHHHH im sooo freaking depressed now today not only do I owe $1000 for sitting in a room alone for 3+ hours, but im thinking about what I went through and what I lost now. this sucks.
ETA: On top of it all Jason is getting the flu or something and has been pretty sick since last night...RIGHT AROUND O TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Life sucks sometimes!

Oh Ashley I'm so sorry! (((((hugs)))))
There's really nothing they can do? How were you supposed to know you were supposed to go to a women's observation clinic? WTH? Can you appeal this? Write a letter, get a letter from your regular doctor? etc.
I'm so very sorry that you've had to live through your loss again. What a world we live in...
Insurance companies are pure evil, I swear!

I second the vote that insurance companies are evil. All in all though I am glad that I have insurance. Without insurance everything that happened from when I went to the OB the first time on 11/5/08 after I got my BFP until 12/12/08 would have cost me over $10,000. "Thankfully" I have a maximum $2500 out of pocket with my insurance. BLAH!
Talking with a friend on Sunday (who has the same insurance as my husband, I have my own insurance through my work) she only paid $165 for her entire pregnancy! She said she only got billed one copay of $15 and $150 for her hospital stay. But that just seems SO low that I almost doubt it.
Needless to say I have been looking into insurance a lot over the last week. **sigh** It's not fun!

Yea, I definitely need new insurance my deductible (for my individual plan) is $1000 and I seriously go to the dr. once a year so it is soooo useless because at that time my deductible is not covered so i have to pay anyway. UGH. I deal with alot of insurance companies at work and I know from experience my company SUCKS (I have BCBS) Aetna is a really good company they always pay really well with no denials or anything for no reason so I am going to look into somehow getting my insurance changed. I dont want to deal with this right now though I have soooo much going on.
Lauren- They told me they would have a "specialist" call me back, but in all honesty i bet they are not going to do anything at all. The lady even said, I can have her call you back but since you came in "in the state you were in" their most likely not going to do anything. ugh.

Omg, that is horrible! I would appeal it for sure. Insurance companies are a huge pain. I had trouble over some billing issues after my miscarriage. You know what? Finally I had Dh call and he was mean to them and they fixed it. I just couldn't deal with talking to them about my miscarriage anymore so he did it for me.
And now this time around, I am STILL waiting for them to cover my progesterone suppositories (but they have at least now agreed to, just don't have the check yet). It was initially denied as infertility treatment even thought I was already pregnant when I started taking them.
Good luck hon. Unfortunately you may have to keep calling if you want them to cover this. Ask to speak to supervisors. Have Dh call for you if you can't handle it. Also, keep a record of names of the people you spoke to, what date you spoke to them and what they told you.

I hope the "specialist" is able to work something out. It's total crap that you would have to pay for this!

Oh, she may very well have! That's about all it's going to cost me to have a baby. I pay one $15 co-pay for all of my appointments and my $150-200 for a hospital stay. But I work for the state, which gets you pretty good insurance for things like pregnancy and basic illnesses/prescriptions. It's when you get into the grey areas that they do everything they can to screw you over. However, they still do a lot of shady stuff because they know a lot of people aren't paying attention. Like when they tried to make me pay for my CT scan and blood work when they thought my appendix were going to burst. I was on the phone for weeks trying to get that taken care of! Such a pain. If I hadn't KNOWN that it was covered I may have just gone ahead and paid it - which I'm sure happens a lot.

to the friend being correct probably. Mine is $25 for all my pre-pregnacy appointments/labs/workups (it would only be $15 if I was in the USA) and $100 for my Alternative Birthing Center (or if needed hospital) stay (it would be $200 if I was out of country). But you don't want to know what my husband pays to get "great" insurance.....and they still suck at stuff-I have a on going file of TWO years worth of calls trying to get a pathology bill paid for! I HATE insurance companies!
I hope it works out for you!!!!

I hate to say this, but that bill sounds about right.. I know certain insurance companies charge ER visits differently. I know at the Hospital I work at, just to sit in the room costs $800 and the employee's use to pay that.. But they reduced the employee's charge to $400. My insurance covered my pregnancy different then those listed.. I paid around $6,000 for my whole pregnancy, including ob visit, 3 day hospital stay, NST's, diabetes care, and newborn care.. Luckily, my place of employment gives us $600 a year for medicall expenses so that helped out a lot. I can't complain to much because my health insurance is free..

I know the bill is right, it is the insurance not paying that is the problem. (well im still kinda pissed they charged me $203/per hour of sitting in a room to wait for the dr to give me my results, I would have kindly waited in the waiting room or something that is rediculous). My ER visit co-pay is supposed to be $100 and that is all I should have had to pay.

I'm lost here... If the bill is bc you didn't go to the Women's unit, but the ER instead, shouldn't the typical ER copay cover it??
Another insurance company piece of garbage.. My sister JUST got the authorization for Nicky's heart surgery. That was kind of them to notify her AFTERWARD!

No, it is because I went to the womens unit and not the ER!! My dr told me since I was pregnant I had to go to the "pregnant womens ER" (womens unit) and not the regular ER. But she said it was still the ER so I assumed thats how it would be billed.

That is SUCH crap. I guess the good news-- if there IS anything-- is that as long as you are paying something on a schedule with a medical bill, I don't believe it will affect your credit if you don't have the money at the moment. I'm so sorry!

I think so long as you are in the process of appealing the charges, it won't hurt your credit. It is when they send it to collections that you start getting into trouble.

If I owe it and they arent going to do anything to help me, then im going to pay it I wouldnt let it go to collections...its just sooooo frustrating that I could pay some other bill with that, i mean $1000 is alot! And it just makes me mad, that it is just being thrown away pretty much because someone else put me under the impression that it was an ER visit and would be $100, not to mention sitting in the room and waiting and being charged for that.
