Hey everyone,
A few days ago I took my 1-hour glocuse test, and was stunned to learn that I didn't pass. I was told that my numbers were on the low side and that I most likely didn't have gestational diabetes, but I still didn't pass and will now take the 3-hour test. I was told that 3/4 women who fail the first test end up passing the second, but I am still worried. I have been trying to avoid sugary products just in case, but it's just so, so hard......chocolate is such a source of happiness for me right now, and I felt so depressed today that I just had to have 2 pieces of chocolate to perk myself up again. I really am hoping that I don't have gestational diabetes, because I have been having extreme dry mouth at night and I know that extreme thirst can be a sign. But if I do end up having gestational diabetes, I hope that Toby won't be harmed in anyway Wish me luck ladies, my 3-hour test will be on Thursday (grrr, I wish that it were sooner!)

Good luck. Lots of ladies fail the 1hr but pass the 3hr just fine. Saddly I'm not one of them, I'm starting insulin for the second time next week.

I have a feeling your going to pass and don't think just because you ate sweet stuff, that causes GD.. Sugary stuff is not the issue.. GD is due to changes in hormones and the Placenta, not what you eat.. It can affect anyone tiny or fluffy, healthy eater or a somewhat healthy eater..
When I was pregnant with Adriana, I had GD. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and it was caught before it did any harm to Adriana. I was boderline diabetic when I was diagnosed but as my pregnancy progressed I went full blown diabetic and had to go on insulin for my FBS (diet and exercise cannot control that). Adriana was born healthy and small and is still petite to this day..
oh, just to give you an idea on how food affect blood sugar numbers when I had GD.. When I ate a piece of cake at my baby shower at 36 weeks, my blood sugar numbers was super low.. BUT when I ate a half of an apple, my numbers went up and that's bad.. That's how crazy certain sugars affect the body.. I'm saying this to reassure you that eating a chocolate cake is fine..

I'm sorry, Jen. I know how devastating that is. I have some experience w/ failing these things. When I was pregnant w/ Abs, I failed both tests. I was led at first to believe that I had GD, then I found out that I didn't...just had high blood sugar. I went to a nutritionist, and I didn't agree w/ everything he was telling me (don't eat fruit at all, but eat full-fat ice cream every day, I had to gain 30 lbs.) and my dr. even agreed that not all the advice was sound. I watched my carb & sugar intake & was fine. I was able to be really good the first few weeks, but towards the end I craved cookies, so I would have like a small bag of cookies (individual serving size) like maybe even one per day at the end.
With this pregnancy, I failed the 1 hour miserably. I thought I'd have GD for sure based on what I'd heard at the GD board. I just made sure to get some exercise in (that is what lowers blood sugar for me) from a few days prior to the 3 hour. I cut down but didn't eliminate carbs & sugars. I probably didn't have to do the latter based on everything I've read since they don't stay in your bloodstream long enough to affect the test. I actually passed this one...the nurse said all my #s were normal.
I hope things go well for you on Thursday. I will keep my fingers crossed for you, hon!

Thank you for all the encouraging words, now I don't feel so bad about indulging in a few sweets now and then. When you are pregnant, everything seems forbidden to you, and it's so nice to just treat yourself once in awhile. But I will see how my test will go on Thursday, and I will try not to worry too much about it. Thanks again!
