Reid has had a persistent cough for about a week and a half now, but I didn't think much of it. He had a cold and I thought that the cough was just lingering, which has happened before, and it really wasn't effecting his mood at all. Yesterday, the cough started to sound very wet and when we woke up this morning, it was rattling in his chest and he looked HORRIBLE - red eyes, runny nose, and now smiling like he usually does. I made an appointment and DH took him in today at 2:30. Turns out, he has Bronchiolitis (inflamation of the passages in his lungs). At the doctors office, they had him use a breathing machine with medication in it. He now has a prescription for Prednisone (a version safe for babies) and a breathing machine is being delivered to our house tonight. He has to use it every 4 hours, and take the steriod twice a day. The doctor said that if it gets too hard for a baby to breath, they will just....stop They really aren't that alarmed, just want to stay on top of it and make sure that he can breath okay. The doc said that the medicine may also cause him to vomit, but this is a good thing. It helps him clear out his lungs of the phlem.
I'm really scared, but he seems to be in an okay mood and is happy. The machine may be delivered as late as 11pm....can you believe that?!
I just took a bath with him for the first time. It was wonderful He hasn't been eating very well, especially these last 24 hours. We nursed in the tub and he had a full meal and it was literally the best breastfeeding session that we have ever had. It was so peaceful and relaxing.
They docs office sent DH home with a little facemask for his breathing machine. It's so tiny and sad. I'll take a pic of it in action. DH said that when they gave him a treatment at the office he seemed to enjoy it and was playing with the tubing. hehe.
I'm nervous to have him sleep tonight. He will sleep more upright in his swing and with the cool mist humidified. Part of me wants to stay up and watch him all night
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update: The dang machine finally arrived late last night. He does really well with it. You would think that he would fight it, but its like he knows that its helping. As I'm holding him, I can feel his breathing getting easier while he's using it.
I guess I just have a hard time with this because it brings back memories of when my mom was very sick a year and a half ago. The prednisone, the mask....it's just all too similar. My mom's life was in danger back then, so it really freaks me out. I understand that whats happening with Reid is fairly common, so I'm trying to relax.
My mom is home watching him at our house today, and both DH and I are trying to get out of work early just to be home with him.
Here are pics of my little boy  He was falling asleep with it on last night.
I know your fears. Edward had this when he was a week old. I took him to the doctor for his first check up after being born and they rushed him to the hospital in an ambulance. He was on oxygen for 3 months. Now, I live in Colorado, so it's *supposedly* common for babies in Colorado to need oxygen because of high altitude levels. It's really not as scary as it seems. I know it's easy for me to say, but just know, I've been there too if you need to talk. Hang in there Hun! You both will get through this!!
My boss' niece just got over bronchitus and had to do the breathing treatments as well! I'm sure it's very scary... but you guys will make it through this and he'll be okay. I'm glad he did fine with the treatment this afternoon and it doesn't look like he'll be fussy about doing it. I bet nursing in the bath was great and very relaxing! Hang in there! You two are in my T&P's!
Oh Poor Reid....I will definitely say my prayers that he feels better quickly. I do know what you are going through. My son (like Justine's) has had many problems with respiratory stuff and has tubes in his ears and sees an ENT to monitor his tonsils (which we are hoping don't need to come out and so far so good). My son had his first wheezing episode at 11 weeks and it was scary as hell. They won't say he has asthma but we think that is probably what it is....he gets colds/coughs often and he has to do the breathing machine every time. Now that he is older he sits and does it no problem like its no big thing. A couple of times he's gotten strep throat or bronchitus and the wheezing is so bad that his check caves in when he breathes and the doctor tests his oxygen level and its too low - that is scary too. But he always does just fine as soon as he get a breathing treatment. It is so sad to see them so tiny with the little breathing mask on, and hear them coughing like an old man. Harrison almost always vomits when he has a bad cold because of the plem and all that....that was very hard when he was a baby now he gets better at stopping himself from gagging on it.....but it is still sad. I hope that this is just a one time thing and he gets better really quickly! Good luck girl.....stay up with him if you have too - won't be the first time a mommy has done it (take it from a mommy who has!)
Poor Reid! Sounds like he will do well with the treatments which is good. He is in my thoughts and I hope he gets back to 100% quickly.
And that pic of Seamus is so sad the poor baby. I can only imagine how scary it is when your baby is having trouble breathing.
