My computer is not working, it doesn't wan to boot up. I'm currently working on it, but the first time I am not a fan of having a mac is right now. Trying to find someone over here to fix it just isn't working. I don't know if it is fixable, looks like I may need a new one (ok so THATs not all bad news LOL). However I didn't back up any of my music or address book stuff. LUCKILY one of the ladies in the photography forum just had her computer crash in Dec and reminded us to back up our photos, so tops I lost a month of those. I can live with that.
Anyway I now only have internet on DH's work computer once he is done with using it in the eve. So you may notice I'm not on as much. I just wanted to let you all know I'm safe and everything is ok. its just my computer so I may be in and out until I get a new computer or this one fixed.

On a side note---DH thinks we may get sent back home early (like in the next couple weeks). So this hopefully will be a short term problem and not last till May when we were originally scheduled to go back home.

On a computer note----anyone know how to fix macs?
When I turn on my computer it doesn't boot up it just gives me a screen with a grey folder icon thats blinking and has a ? mark on it (I think this is the Mac version of the PC's blue screen of death! LOL).

Esh Ang....

Your hard drive died or is in the process of dying.

Your computer can not find the software that is used to start up the computer. Which usually means the hard drive is either dead, or dying.

I would leave it be since you have stuff on there you said you want to try and get. Otherwise if you dont care, If you're running only OS 9, you can reinstall the original CD and boot up from it by holding down the "C" key during startup -- and i think OSX works the same way. Try reinstalling and if that works, yay. If not, RIP hard drive

Laptops can last awhile, just like all computers can. Its the components in them that die. Hard drives are supposed to last 3-5 years, most people get more then 5 years outta them though. I have an 11 year old hard drive that still works.

I think it depends on the computer. MILs harddrive died after a year and she doesn't use it much, it prob gets daily use but nothing major like forums, downloading or anything like that.

thanks for letting us know you are fine

Yes...it does sound like the PC version of the death screen. Sorry.

As for how long computers last...well, I manage to screw something up with my computers every 3-5 yrs. But my dad is a computer program (thank god, he is a genius with computers). It's always been something he can fix/replace and get it working again. Or he'll give me another computer from his lab. But then again I've never had a new computer, they are always old hand me downs from my dads collection, but they work great for the most part and can usually be fixed.

I was wondering about you too Angela-

I asked DH about your Mac- he's a wiz, said its not good. Its probably dead now! I'm sorry! I never had a Mac, although I've wanted one of the Mac Air books. But have always had a PC laptop. I'm on my 2nd in 5 years now. And I'm bad about backing up too. Never thing about it.
