My floor is a "model floor" at the hospital. No matter what happens we always make sure we're staffed properly. People look out for eachother. We're a great team. Our patient satisfaction scores are through the roof! Because of this they are taking our manager away to have her manage another struggling floor "temporarily".
While all this is happening.... The hospital closes our 6 bed outpatient cardiac unit. AND closes 6 of our floor beds so they can be used for outpatient caths. Now we have 2 extra nurses for each shift. We've been taking turns and taking vacation days so that everyone can get some hours on the floor.
There was a mandatory meeting today, so I pulled myself out of my bed on my day off..... and they are laying off 7 of our nurses. We should know who's who by the end of the month. I have no seniority. I've been in my position for just under 2 years. I'm nervous. They claim the layoffs will be based more on performance appraisals than on seniority, but still. I'm just crushed. I worry about a lot of things... but never my job. They are willing to "place us within the hospital". But everyone knows the open positions are on the crap units...
We might be putting off TTC for a while.
