I want to know how breastfeeding will change once Oliver gets older and starts eating solids. More towards the one year mark and older. How often does Lochy (I like that nickname) eat? Will I still need to pump while at work during the day when he is older? Will he come up to me and ask to nurse once he is walking and talking? I want to know all about how things progress with the nursing relationship.

As he got older he became less interested during the day. There was too much to do for him to be bothered. He still always had to have it before nap though and other than when he woke up in the morning that was all he had til he went to bed at night. During the night he still nursed quite a bit. I had to night wean him a couple weeks ago because he was getting worse--every hour and a half or so. I know a lot of Moms stop pumping once their little ones reach a year. I suppose you could still pump for a nap time feeding if he really needs it or get him used to going down for a nap without it during the week and just nurse him for it on the weekends or whenever you're home. By the time you get to a year or so your supply doesn't really take the hits it does when they're little. Right now, some days Lochy will nurse up to 4 times or as little as once and it doesn't matter to my supply at all. When he hit a year though I'd say he was still nursing about 5-7 times a day. You'll see how Oliver is with it though. Just when you think he'll never slow down he'll start cutting back on his own. That usually comes with new things to explore and walking and such.

He does ask for it which is really cute. He calls it "wa-wa" for some reason. I have no idea why. He'll climb up on my lap and tug at my shirt saying wa-wa. Its so funny because he gets so excited to nurse too. When I tell him its time for naps or night-nights he drops whatever he's doing and RUNS to my lap and climbs up, lays back, and gets all ready! Sometimes he'll clap and sing wa-wa! LOL

I'm starting to teach him some manners now though with it. Sometimes he needs to wait and he always needs to say please if he asks for it. I figured if he needs to say please for everything else then nursing should apply too!

I hope I helped a little! Any other questions just ask away!!!

No. I doubt there is a time that would work for me because I work FT. I did go to a BF support group when Oliver was a couple weeks old. I never felt a need to go back because we never had any real issues.

Jenn - Thanks so much for the info! That is sooo cute how he calls it wa-wa.

Hope I can get in on the topic. I have what may be a silly question and I kinda don't want to open a post with it.

I was wondering, when you pump and freeze and you're going out, do you thaw and warm the milk to take with you? Like in one of those bottle warmers?

I've never been to a LLL meeting either. If we ever get to the point of tandem nursing though I think I might because I just don't know how to go about doing that.

Mari--I've never taken a bottle of pumped milk out with me, I've always just NIP. But at my wedding I pumped for weeks before hand so we'd have enough milk for Liam since I knew I wouldn't get to nurse him that much (my supply was already crap and I started domperidone and pumping like crazy to bring it back on our honeymoon). So that day we just left all the little baggies frozen and carried them around in a cooler. When it was time for him to eat my Mom (who usually had him) would just run the baggy under hot water until it was warmed and then transfer to the bottle. That's what I do at home when thawing EBM for a bottle so I imagine that's what I'd do if we were out and about and wanted to bring a bottle. Just make sure you don't microwave it!

Ethan was a major boob-a-holic. He was still nursing upwards of 12 times per day when he was 18 months old! At that point, I night weaned him. He would ask to "nurse."

He would even pull my shirt up and nurse without permission sometimes! And if I was naked (fresh out of the shower) and picked him up, he'd just help himself, lol. He was heartbroken when I weaned him at 2.

Mari- I would defrost mine and either put it in the Carry bag ( I'd freeze it over night ) and It would saty for a few hours. If I knew she was going to eat an hour later I would just put it in the Diaper bag so It would stay at room temputure. At first she had no problem drinking cold milk but around 4-5 months she wanted it warm or room temp.

I went to those meetings for a while. I hated the old ladies there though. They'd always ask me questions and when I would answer them they would say I was wrong and make me feel bad. I stopped going a long time ago.

LOL Lochlann does that too! The other day he got my shirt all gross so I took it off and didn't go right up to get a new one. He saw me topless and his eyes just about popped out of his head! He was so excited! He climbed right up on my lap and helped himself to both sides.LOL

He tries to get my shirt up himself too and manages quite nicely for his early morning nurse.LOL

Amy- there were old ladies at the LLL meetings you went to? I went to 2, and I was the oldest there probably- I'm 32. I wasn't the only preggo girl either... and all the other BF'ing moms were in their 20s, and just sat in a circle and talked about BFing... while the kids played, and the moms held their babies and nursed when they needed to. lots of boobs just hanging out. And the leader spoke about topics, like NIP, why you choose to BF, how its helped your relationships... etc.

And Resi, there are meetings near me that are at 7 pm... so I'm sure you could find one in the evening after work, and it would be so fun to do with your baby and be around other moms who BF too.

Jenn- you will get alot about tandem nursing when you go... but you prob would get alot out of it now too, even if you aren't having any issues. Its just great to go and see the women who are doing something you are doing It is really fun!!! And its only 1 time per month~! Here its the last Thurs of every month at 10 am, and another city does it the 2nd Wed of each month at 7 pm.

Ok thats my 2 cents, and I'm not even nursing yet

I just went on the site and checked out my local areas. There is nothing close to me after my work hours. The only place is over an hour away. 7PM would be too late for us anyways because that is when we start getting ready for bed. It does sound like a nice thing to do if it was possible for me.

Thanks ladies. I have a cooler bag that I can put the milk in once it is thawed. I guess I can take some warm water in a thermos to warm the milk when she needs it. I don't want to give her it cold because she's gassy.

I go to a LLL class which has been great so far. I should have asked this question on Friday when I went but I didn't think of it and the next meeting isn't until the end of March (last Friday).
