Preston mainly eats on my right breast, occassionlly on the left. Tonight I have been what seems like half engorged, but only in my right breast. On the outer part of my breast, it feels hard and is painfull to touch, but on the inner part, it's soft and normal. I've pumped and the milk comes shooting out and only seems to half relieve the engorgement. As soon as I stop pumping, it's like I fill up again. Preston seems to be eating just fine but I'm not getting any relief. I had this happen last month, same side but when I pumped, I didn't get anything and Preston would get mad because he wasn't getting anything. As gross as it is and as bad as it hurt, I had DH suck to try and get the milk out, he had to do it about 5 times, but I finally got relief. I only have this on the right side, never on the left. Preston favors my right because my let down on the left is so fast. Is this mastitis or a clogged duct???

ETA: It's also lumpy where the engorgement is.....

That's a clogged duct. Mastitis is basically a clogged duct that gets infected. You get a high fever, your breast turns red & feels hot to the touch, and you feel achy & yucky like you have the flu. Mastitis is pure hell!

I was gonna say what Jess said.

As painful as it is, try massaging before & during nursing. It shoul unclog it. I find a warm washcloth on it for a while helps the pain. Hope it eases soon for you, it's a horrid pain!

Sounds like a clogged duct, also something you may want to try....take a nice hot bath and when the water gets cool enough for him try feeding while in the tub!

I have a clogged duct in my left breast at the moment. It feels just like that. Just keep pumping and pumping....I can feel when mine starts to un-clog. It feels sooo good.

Yup, I agree with the others. I had a clogged duct twice with Liam--once at 2 months and once at 11 months. The first one almost turned into mastitis. I hope you get some relief soon, those things hurt!

Thanks ladies....I figure it was a clogged duct because I don't have a fever. It seems to be better today, but I'm going to try the bath like Angela suggested and hopefully that'll work.
