Looking back on it now, I feel silly b'c I guess I was ignoring a lot of the signs. I started to lose my mucous plug on Wednesday, 3/4. I was getting more cramping & contractions from that point but never regular or if so, they'd go away after a while. Sunday, 3/8 Brant decides we'll all get out of the house for a bit so Abs & I wouldn't get cabin fever. One of the teams from our school was having a carwash/bake sale fundraiser, so we went to that. Then we went to buy lunch. I ended up feeling pretty hungry, so I had a big lunch at home. (I guess my body knew I'd need the energy for later!)
Anyway, I went to lay down & read after lunch because I started just feeling rather tired all of a sudden. About 12:30 I walked down the hall to get Abby for her nap, and just before I got there, my water broke! So I tell Brant and then I go to the bathroom to get a pad. I start finishing my bag (yeah, I still wasn't fully packed by then, even though I kept saying to myself that I'd get it done). I lost more water, though, so I went to sit in the bathroom. Abby was helping me by bringing things since I didn't really want to stand up, while Brant was calling his parents to let them know they needed to pick up Abby. Then I called my mom to tell her & Brant helped me finish packing up and getting ready. His parents arrived & they wanted to stay here w/ Abby but Brant told them to just go home because it might be more comfortable for me to hang out in my birthday suit until it was time to go

We must've left the house around 1:30 and I figured everything would be smooth sailing on a Sunday afternoon. Well, there was a 6 car accident on the freeway! Luckily it didn't take too long, but I was a little anxious, as was Brant. It must've taken about an hour to get to the hospital. Brant drove to the ER and the security got me a wheelchair (man it is messy when your water breaks) then wheeled me up to the triage floor. They checked me in and since I wasn't contracting regularly or in much pain and there was someone ahead of me for a c-section, they decided I could wait. I hadn't even called my OB since I figured getting to the hospital was most important, and he had said that if I had to deliver on a non-scheduled time, another dr. would be doing the surgery. But my OB rocks...he said he could come in for a 6 p.m. surgery. Anyway, the nurse must've been a newbie...she tried to do my IV line 2x and couldn't so she called in someone else who was successful. Ouch.
I figured I'd just mainly be waiting around & stuff, no big deal. Well, Brant was going to run back home for the camera which we had forgotten. Then he came back a few min. later because he got a ticket for not using his turn signal to change lanes. He said it was right near the hospital & the cop gave him a bad time...my poor hubby was rather upset. But it was one of those "things happen for a reason" because he ended up calling his parents to bring down their camera. My MIL is a retired nurse and by then the cx were really painful all of a sudden...she saw the monitor and asked if I was having rectal pressure then went to tell the nurse. The 2nd nurse who did my IV came to do an internal & you should have seen the look on her face...baby was right there!
They asked if I wanted to push & I said no. I had no idea how big he was, and w/ my previous issues we really wanted to avoid a vaginal delivery. I asked if I could still do the sec., and they sped to that OR. Once I got the spinal put in I felt instant relief...that must've been around 5:40-ish and Joshua was born at 5:53 p.m. He was 6 lbs. 10 oz. and 19.5 inches. My dr. wasn't there yet when they started, but he was able to be there for delivery. I was slightly worried that Brant wouldn't make it in there b'c he was having problems getting the booties on...he is a big guy and I think they barely fit! But he got in on time and was able to do pics, cut the cord, be w/ me, etc.
It was all quite a whirlwind, to say the least. My OB apologized to me because he felt that I should have been checked earlier. Josh's head was actually in my birth canal and there was a hematoma when they took him out. It healed, though, and we're both okay. It's just so different from my first experience with childbirth...that was very traumatic and my labor was really long. I feel like my recovery and stress levels are a lot better this time, and Brant also was impressed with how much better our experience has been.
This was all such a shock, but I think in a way it was better that it happened this way (well, except for almost not making it to surgery). I was starting to get worried about how I would feel in the final days before the scheduled c-section because Abby is so used to having me put her down at night and also I was scared I'd go into labor and not even know it. Now we have our little guy and he is the most precious thing ever. Abby loves being a big sister and she is learning to adjust . It's amazing to watch my kids and to know that our family is now complete
