ok so folic acid is water soluble.. Therefore if I am taking 1600mcg and I dont need all 1600mcg my body will get rid of it... so my question is, it's not possible to take too much right? I ask because I thought my pre-natal was only 400mcg so I have been taking an extra which is 800mcg.. but they are both 800mcg. Guess I need glasses! lol

Nope! Their water soluble so you cant take too much! Like you said, your body will just get rid of what you dont need.

If you are already getting 800mcg, I wouldnt continue to take an extra 800 mcg as well. While I've heard of Drs writing for higher doses of folic acid (> 1-2 grams), it is usually in the setting of absorbtion problems or prior births with defects. While I dont think 1600 mcg will have any toxic effects, any excess still has to be processed by body. IMO...too much of anything isnt good.

I think she said she was accidentally taking that many and wanted to make sure it wouldnt hurt her, and then she realized she was taking too many and stopped!

I did stop taking the extra once I noticed, my mom did have to take extra when she was pregnant with my sister, (they thought my sister had spina bifida because of my moms amnio results) but since my sister is fine, I dont think it effects me. I'll just double check when I go back to the dr again! thanks ladies!

most doctors will say 800-1000mcg daily (best to be taken twice a day doses so 400 am, 400pm)
