I didn't get a kit, I ordered some capsules online, that's really all you need! I just filled them by hand and it wasn't hard.

These are the exact ones I got
iHerb.com - Product Details - Now Foods, Double 00 Gelatin Caps, 750 Empty Capsules

(The only other equipment I used was a steamer and a little food processor type thingy, and then you can either dry it out on a food dehydrator or in the oven)

So you just bake it then grind it up and stick it in the capsules?
i don't have a steamer---can I work around that step some how
also how do you know when its done?

oh and how many capsules did you get?

increase milk supply, pain reliever, helps prevent low iron/depression/baby blues, gives you more energy, decrease postpartum bleeding, helps uterus constrict and return to normal quicker., etc. It pretty much helps you bounce back to your prepregnancy health faster and smoother.

Ok thats the stuff I can name off the top of my head LOL. There are more reasons, but those are my biggest. Its funny when I was in China and having a talk with a group of moms they were repulsed that we just throw out our placentas.....people pay big money for these in many parts of the world because of the health benifits. Its GREAT for menapause also (your can freeze some of the pills and save them!). I know most people hear me talk about this and think I go old school and eat it raw in chunks and cook it in soups/meals, but actually the placenta gets old and so the best way to get the longest treatment with them is to put them in pill form (and less gross to me--I don't think I could just eat it!).

Well, I had a pot of boiling water with the insert thingie that has holes in it (does that make sense?), and I put the placenta in the top part and it steamed it. It's pretty much just like cooking a piece of meat when it's done it will be cooked all the way through with no blood/juices coming out if you press on it.
I cut mine into strips, dehydrated it, ground it up and then put it into capsules And I ordered that 750 count bag and it was MORE than enough!

I've never heard of a hospital allowing you to take your placenta home.

There was a case that went all the way to a state supreme court (can;t remember which state exactly) where a woman wanted to take her placenta and the hospital wouldn't let her...she won hands down! It's YOUR placenta and you can do whatever you want with it. You just have to let them know that you want it otherwise I think they put it in the incinerator with all the other "biohazard" stuff.

For the record I'm really really glad I encapsulated mine. I never got the emotional problems this time around that I had with Aden, and as soon as the FILs left and I got it encapsulated and started taking it my milk supply went through the roof! I still make enough for twins lol!

I considered this before I was pregnant. I thought it would be a huge fight with the hospital to try to take mine home. Plus, I don't think I could have cooked it. It would have grossed me out to much. I think it's a great thing to do though..

I wasn't worried about the hospital, surprisingly it was really easy! We just told them we wanted it and then my doula took it home and put it in her fridge haha!

I thought I would be grossed out by the cooking and stuff, although that didn't discourage me from doing it. But I found that I wasn't grossed out at all, it was just kind of cool and I didn't think it smelled weird or anything. My doula said that it usually smells really weird to everyone except the mom!

They have to let you bring it home...its considered a "religious" ritual (its like declining some meds/procedures things the "religious" thing doesn't have to be related to a religion-instead its a moral/strong belief in it). Some hospitals/birthing centers will have you fill out some forms but they can't stop you from it. (if you have a contagious blood disease though I DO think they have some other rules though).

There's a company that sells a kit for making the capsules or you can have them send a specialist out to your home to prepare the capsules for you, I'm really considering having someone come out and do it for me, I just have to get DH on board completely.

^^^^ I looked into doing that. But there is no one I could find in my area. But there is someone going through training right now---so there is a chance I can get them when they are done!

DH didn't care as long as he didn't have to help make them LOL

my dh would think i'm totally wierd but i'm thinking about encapsulating it when the time comes now. i'm hoping to get a midwife and birth at home so maybe they could just pop it in the freezer and i could cook it up when my dh goes back to work. sneaky! lol

Yeah I have to admit...on this one DH thinks I'm a little weird. But I haven't shared with him yet my research! He knows how much I look into things so he figures if I want to there must be a good reason. But this one he doesn't want to help with, which is ok because he starts gagging at blood from a hang nail being pulled! LOL
Oh you can just pay someone to do it for you actually! Placenta Benefits.info - Mother Nature, for Mothers. Avoid the baby blues and enjoy a natural, healthy postpartum period with your new baby. has a spot that you can find people trained for it.
