We went in on Fri. Joshua had to be woken up and he wasn't really hungry when we went in, which surprised both Brant and I. Since he wasn't interested in eating, of course he wouldn't latch. The LC told me that I make enough milk to feed him BM exclusively (which is not true)...for some reason I was very engorged when I went in...very unusual for me, and I had pumped 2 or 3x that day already. Her suggestions were to pump for 3-5 min. before I feed him, to pump after I feed him, and to make sure I up my pumping from 6x a day to 8-12x a day. She also said to make sure I keep wearing my shells at least for 30 min. before a feeding and to try to BF him at every feeding. And since we couldn't do much with him, I made an appointment to go back on Thurs.

I feel bad, but there is no way I can do all of those things without driving myself into depression. I think I could perhaps pump 7x a day, possibly 8x...but seriously I would not be able to sleep more than a few min. at a time if I were to pump 12x a day. I found that I really don't need to pump before feedings b'c I'm normally not engorged. I have worked w/ Joshua several xs a day since then but not at every single feeding. He is now latching sometimes but improperly and I have had 2 decent nursing sessions since then (10-15 min. but only on one breast--once on each side). Yesterday morning I was feeling hopeful that I could do the correction myself, and now, about 30 hrs. later I just feel horrible about this whole thing. It's been such an emotional rollercoaster for me. I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel, but if things don't improve, I'll probably have to stop BFing and just pump & supplement. So I guess I'm not that committed to this as I had thought, but after thinking it through and feeling so drained (even though I have LOTS of help at home) and upset, I think that might be for the best.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time! No one is going to condemn you if it doesn't work after your next appointment. You gave Josh the best headstart in life possible and EBF just does not work for everyone! Good luck!

It's a shame Joshua wasn't alert and hungry when you had your appointment, but I'm glad you made another one. Maybe there's an easy fix to his improper latch that your'e somehow overlooking and you won't have to be pumping 12x/day etc. Hang in there... and even if you can't make EBF work, it's still FANTASTIC that you're willing to pump for him too.

I hated when I went to my LC and they would tell me something And I KNOW that what they were saying was wrong.....If you can't BF dont feel bad that you have to pump...Thats what Ive been doing for the last few months. And there's no way I pumped 12 times a day! Who has time for that! I hope you feel better soon....Dont be hard on yourself, your a great mom! But I think we need some pic's on that lil man

I was just reading on Kellymom.com that just b'c your LC says everything is okay, if it hurts to BF then it's not. Totally thought of you there!

I have to figure out what DH did w/ my camera cord so I can upload some pics...I have a few new ones that I've been wanting to share...my baby boy is 4 weeks old today (sun)!

Thanks girls for being supportive. IDK why it bothers me so much that I might be mainly pumping & supplementing when I did it w/ Abs. I guess I just had a different picture in my head.

BUT...I GOT HIM LATCHED ONCE TODAY AND IT ONLY HURT AT THE BEGINNING!!! Gotta love the football hold. I'm still having some trouble w/ the inverted side, though...sometimes he can get on but not always, so I guess even though it's going to take the better part of the day to go on Thurs. we'll keep our appointment.

I hope Thursday goes better. I wouldn't worry too much if things don't work out. Sounds like you truly are trying your hardest and that's all you can do!!! You need to be a happy mom!!!

I HATE pumping haha I couldn't imagine pumping 12 times a day!!!

I hope Thursday goes better. Ditto to what the ladies said before as well.

It's just typically that when you have a problem and the person shows up to fix it, the problem disappears until the person has left.

WTG for latching him on today!!! Even if it was just once, it's a step in the right direction!
