On Friday I'm going to interview with a family that is looking for a PT nanny. They have a 11 month old son. It would be working 3 days per week. I don't have any other details. She did say it would be fine to bring Oliver along and wants to meet him when I interview.

I'm a little nervous because I can be shy and not that outgoing around new people. I know I need to be more bubbly etc. when meeting her little one.

Does anyone know what the going rate is for being a nanny? I know it varies by location. Any past nannies give me some pointers?

i just read an article that said live-out nannies in my city make about $400 a week.
the article also said that in smaller communities live-out nannies would make about $275 a week.

i hope it goes well resi!

I'm a nanny currently but I make a flat fee with my current family. With my other families I use to work hourly it just happens this last family preferred the flat fee vs hourly rate. I don't know what the going rate is in your area though vs mine. One of the reasons I like nannying, besides working with kids which I love, is that after I get pregnant I can still bring my kids with me to work. The kids I watch are older though, 9 and 13, which is why it works I think because they don't need supervision all the time. When I use to work for another family they had a 18 month old and I would have never thought to ask them about bringing my own baby simply because she was a full time job. Thats just my own assessment of myself though.

Tam, from our playroom was a nanny, but I'm sure San Fransisco pays at least double what you'd make in IN. Good luck, I hope you get it!

Resi, I think Tam charged $16/hour when she nannied, but that's in a major city. Keep asking around and doing research in your area so that you have a fair number in mind when you interview. Are you thinking of doing this exclusively and not working for your current company?

Good luck! You'll do great!

I was looking at some nanny jobs about 7 years ago in a major TX city and the ones I was looking at were paying $8-10 an hour. Most of these were families with several kids, and a little older. Good luck!

Good luck Resi.

I used to do a little nanny work but I got paid a flat fee as well. It all depends on location I think. Ask around and see what nannies in your area are getting, that will give you a better idea when it comes to interview time.

I have been thinking about watching 1-2 children/babies in my home or finding a family to nanny for since having Oliver. I'm just starting to look into it now. I happened to come across an ad and thought I would reply and got an interview. I would exclusively do this and not work for the current company I'm with.

I used to work as a nanny but like the others I got a flat fee. When I took care of 4 little girls (ages 5, 3, 16 months, and 11 months when I started) I got $425 a week. But the Mom was also a SAHM so she tended to be there a bit. I left that after a year and went on to nanny for one little boy who was 4 months old when I started. I think I got $450 a week for him. I looked into getting a nanny job after Liam was born and I quit my job but no one would let me bring him with me--that's so awesome that she's willing to let you do that! When we move I'm also looking to take in one or two children to bring in some extra money. My Mom had an in home daycare from the time I was about 2 til I was 14 or so.

Good luck!!! I think it's a great way for you to get to stay at home with Oliver!!!

I'm thinking that taking in 2 babies or young children would be the way to go. I don't know how easy it will be to find someone who needs childcare FT and is willing to go with me. I never have taken care of a child FT so I don't have any referances to give for childcare. I'm hoping now that I'm a mom and have other referances that will be enough if they like me?

I don't think it matters so much that you've never cared for other peoples children. The fact that you are a Mom will speak volumes. Plus when you sit down with people who are interested and you explain your parenting philosophy I think they'll be really happy with you!

How will you get the word out that you're looking? I remember my Mom used to put up fliers on the bulletin boards at grocery stores and she got a lot of her kids from doing that. Newspaper adds are good too or even maybe criag's list or something.

We can't afford a nanny, but my kids go to an in home daycare and I found her on craigslist! I was kind of leery about the whole craigslist thing at first but apparently a lot of people are doing it. I just went over to her house by myself the first time and then the second time I brought Aden to meet her. Around here an in home daycare is about $100 per week per child. The cost of living is pretty cheap here though!

I still have my job. I'm looking to either nanny or watch a couple children so that I can be with Oliver FT. I may still be stuck at my current position for some time to come.

I don't know much about being a nanny, but good luck! It sounds like a great idea.
