The freaking bears are back! I guess we should have anticipated it being spring and all. The entire contents of our trash can were all over the driveway this morning. The scary thing is that it was after my mil left so I'm a little worried she may have another run in one of these days. The door to our garage isn't that great and is easily pushed in--we had two huge bear paw prints last fall on our door where they pushed on it. Looks like we gotta break out the bungie cords again. I wish I knew how to deter them from the property all together. Any suggestions???

OH NO!
Sorry I don't have any advice, I don't live in a bear area...... Good luck keeping them off your property, though!

How scary!! Maybe there's a section of your local police that deals with wildlife animals.

Nope, they don't care. My mil called when we had the problem in the fall and they said to just bang some pans together and they'd go away. That's all fine and good if we're all in the house but my fil gets home late at night and he's had a run in before.

maybe try putting your garbage out in the morning? I know around here, the bears are less likely to come by if they can't smell the garbage that's just waiting on the curb for them. other than that... not too much I can think of to do... aren't bears fun?

I have no idea what you can do. That is scary! What state do you live in? I don't remember. I keep thinking NJ or NC/SC.

We have to keep our outside trash can outside because theres no room in the garage. We broke out the bungy cords again though and we started bungy cording the fridge in the garage closed too. It sucks because this is my in laws house so there aren't any real changes we can make. They do what they want to do and we just have to clean up the mess from it.
You're right Resi, I live in NJ. Hopefully not for too much longer though!!!

Yup, we've got black bears. Even though we're close to major highways we live around a lot of farmland so we've got bears, deer, foxes, opposums, groundhogs, turkeys, etc. all out and about.

When I lived in NC, I lived in the boonies and we had two bears that were pretty brave. We double bagged our garbage, poured a little ammonia in it before tying it up and never put our garbage out until the morning of trash collection. We also rinsed the trash cans out with water and ammonia every once in a while to keep the garbage smell out of the cans. They can smell the garbage from so far away!! I know there are also alarms you can get that will go off and make a ton of noise (not really fun at night...haha) but the loud noises keep them away.
Now I live in Rochester and get to deal with skunks, deer, foxes, turkeys and raccoons.
