Just copying this from my Facebook

Kieran is loosing weight and we aren't sure why, she nurses every 1-3hrs for 30-40min each time, but she does sleep 6-8hrs a night. She is now at 5lbs 9oz the pedi is making us add formula in now, .5-1oz after each nursing.

According to the pedi she is only 18.5" long, I dont see how she looses a whole inch in length either, and its not like her head was cone shaped or anything at birth to make her seem longer then sense she was breech her head was perfectly round.

I wouldn't worry too much. Cambria only gained 3 OZ's in 2 months and they wanted me to start her on formula. I started pumping for 10 mins after every nursing session and she started gaining a little more that way. I dont know about the legnth thing, maybe they didn't measure her right?

Sounds a lot like what I went through with Liam. He lost a pound by his 3 day appointment (7lbs 5oz at birth down to 6lbs 7oz) and didn't get back up to his birth weight until he was about 4 1/2 weeks old. They scared me into supplementing and all it did was hurt us. It messed up my supply beyond belief (almost to the point of unfixable) and even on formula he was still a very slow gainer. My point is, the formula did nothing to help him gain weight. As long as she's getting enough wet and dirty diapers she is getting enough to eat. Some babies just gain weight slower than others. It doesn't make them sick or wrong, just the way they are. Even today Liam is small--he's 3 years 4 months and barely 28lbs. If you're not comfortable giving her formula then don't. As long as she's getting enough (as seen by her diapers) then she's fine. Every child grows at their own pace. This worried me to no end with Liam but its just the way he is and after weeks of weight checks every couple days and worrying me horribly the docs finally concluded he was just a slow gainer. Because he was 3 weeks early he also had an immature digestive system and had an extremely hard time digesting the formula. I hope she starts gaining some ounces soon, I know how worrying it is!

She went from 6lbs 13oz(12.9oz) to 5lbs 9oz in 16 days

She hasnt' pooped sense Saturday, but her wet diapers are more wet the last 2 days then they were before and shes upto about 5-6wet ones from 4-5 so she added a wet diaper. I've given her 3 feedings of .5oz formula from a feeding cup that lactation had given me last Monday (to feed pumped milk cause she wasn't latching right last week, got better now though)

I agree.. Adriana grows similar to Liam. Adriana was in newborn clothing for the first month and half, same with newborn diapers.. She dropped weight also.. At her 2 week check up, she was 6 lbs.. I did start supplementing but it made no difference.. It is the way she grows.. Even at 18 1/2 months old, she still in 12 month clothing and just barely fitting into her 18 month clothing. She's just a shortie, but that's because she has lots of short genes.. lol. I too use to worry about her growth, but my pediatrician told me that she has a step growth pattern.. Basically she grows a little bit and then stops for a few months, then grows a little bit and stops. But all in all Adriana is growing evenly (head, weight, and height) so I'm happy with that.. Maybe Kieran is the same way.. Stay positive and soon she'll start packing on the pounds..

They could have measured her wrong at the hospital or at the Pediatrician office.. That happened to Adriana at one of her well baby check up for her length measurements.. Same with her head measurements.. I said, there's no way her head shrunk.. lol The Pediatrician also agreed that the measurement was more then likely off..

Do you go to CDA peds or LakeCity Peds? If you go to CDA Peds you can ask for a growth chart at all of your well baby check ups. They do seperate charts for height, weight, and head measurements.. I get them every time I go.. What's nice is that you can see how they are growing and their growth pattern.. I also like seeing where she falls on the percentile range..

Try not to stress about it to much.. She will grow..

Ya we go to CDA peds. I went to them when I was younger and they are the ones that have been Seamus' doctor. We normally see Dr. Savage but shes always booked so we had to see Dr. Martin today who was the pedi in the OR during the c-section.

I don't know about weight loss with babies but perhaps she just a slow starter with weight. I've heard of a lot of babies that have done similar. I hope she starts to gain soon.

She gained 1oz. from yesterday, the pedi said today as long as she gains 1oz a day thats good sinse she lost almost 1.5lbs from birth weight.
She nursed alot more often yesterday, she only got three ½oz cups of formula and spilled about half of it each time, so I'm hoping that means she gained from the increase of nursing and waking her once over night to nurse.

What did the docs say about her "shrinking an inch" -? They must have just measured wrong, whichi means she might not have lost as much weight as they think. Either way, I agree with the other ladies that she will grow at her own pace and don't feel pressured into supplementing with formula jusst yet. She is just ADORABLE, by the way... I can't gget over her perfect little face!

I like CDA Peds.. All of my co-workers try to get me to go to LakeCity Peds, but I'm perfectly happy with CDA Peds.. My favorite doctor is Dr. Craddick (sp?).. He is awesome.. But if you do see him, keep in mind if she's not a big eater. He will constantly tell you to get her to eat more.. He's been telling me this since Adriana's first check up.. lol But you can't force a baby to eat more then they want.. At Adriana's 15 month check up, she dropped to the 25th percentile for her height, weight, and head measurements and he gave me the same lecture.. lol I thought it was funny.. lol But I know he is concerned, but my gosh, Adriana eats like a horse so when he told me to have eat more, my jaw dropped to the ground.. I also told the teachers at daycare and they had the same reaction.. lol Each baby is different and Adriana has always grown evenly (head, length, and weight is always in the same percentile range) so he wasn't to concerned about her slow growth.. Plus, you have to look at genetics.. Adriana is 1/4 Filipino and 1/2 Mexican.. Majority of Filipino and Mexican women are short.. Especially Filipinos.. My mom is only 4'11 and my sister is only 5'0.. So, Adriana is bond to be a shortie..

I wouldn't worry about the length measurement either. They did that to Lochy too. He was born measuring 20.75 inches and the next day at his first appointment the nurse measured him at 20 inches even. She also had him weighing a pound less. You cannot tell me my baby lost a pound and shrunk .75 inches in one day. The dr. just chalked it up to a bad measurement on the nurse's part. Some people aren't as good at it as others I guess.

I'm so glad to hear that she is gaining some! I worried myself sick over Liam. My Mom got me a digital baby scale and I weighed him every single day. I weighed him before feedings and after to see how much milk he was getting. Can you say obsessive? LOL

I really think she's just fine and that this just happens to be the way she grows!

She's also sick. We all got a cold last week coughing and sinus blocked and she started coughing Friday so I'm thinking thats part of her weight loss. Shes been wanting to sleep lots and its getting hard and frustrating to get her to wake up to eat.
She does not want to wake in the night to eat which is the most frustrating.

But today I nursed her for abut 30minutes then pumped the other side(she nurses on one side at a time) and then fed her the pumped milk and she wanted to nurse again right away and nursed for another 15minutes, and acutlly spit up some so we are going to try this and see what happens tomorrow at her weight check.
