Is it normal for him to HATE diaper changes? I'd say he screams during about 75% of them. Is this something he'll grow out of? His circ is almost healed although we are still doing vaseline and gauze on top of his penis.

I started using the cloth and now it looks like there may be some redness on the inside of his thighs and I don't know if he is having some sort of reaction. I'm not sure what to do about it other than go back to sposies and see if that helps. I'm also a little unsure about how tight to put on the cloth. I think maybe his legs are chunky because I am already using the loosest settings on his newborn fitteds and they are supposed to last till he's 10 or 15 pounds. If I don't put them on loose he gets red marks on his legs from the elastic.

Btw, here's a link to his first cloth diaper pics. http://www.justmommies.com/forums/f2...th-photos.html (Matthew's first cloth! photos)

babies cry through everything - its a normal thing. He will grow out of it. If it makes it easier, start singing to him during the changes and when he gets fussy other times, he will recognize the singing as a soothing thing.

As far as cloth diapering, if he's breastfed id say its a reaction to the diapers, only because more times than not, BF babies dont get diaper rash. Ill let Resi answer this one more efficiently because I havent cloth diapered before.

I don't remember Oliver crying for diaper changes as a newborn unless he was already unhappy or hungry. Now that he is older he has been crying when I change him. He hates having his clothes taken on or off too.

I always put the cloth diapers on snug. Do you think it could be what you washed the diapers in? He may be sensative to the detergent. I would put a little bit of diaper cream on each time to help prevent the redness. Another thought is heat rash. Is it hot and maybe needs more air? Oliver has had some minor diaper rash but it usually clears up after a couple days. It's never been too awful.

I use Planet detergent which is supposed to be all natural. I also use that on his clothes and that seems to be okay.
I know you can't use regular diaper cream with the cloth diapers. I asked Dh to get some California baby diaper rash cream and he didn't like that it had so many weird ingredients so he didn't buy it.
Dh thinks it isn't really a rash, it's just a bit red and not anything to worry about. I don't know...I don't know what is "normal" and what is not.

Does the skin look dry where the redness is? Does he flinch or cry out when you run you finger over it? Is it dotty red or a block of red where it is?

If it looks dry, it hurts him and is dotty I'd say it's a rash. If not and it's a block of red, it sounds like something is rubbing against his skin. If his temp is ok and he is feeding, try not to worry as much.

Crying whilst nappy chainging and dressing is normal at this stage. Just keep talking to him (talk nonesense ) Tell him you're just going to take his nappy off, just going to wipe your botty, now we're putting a clean nappy on... etc. Give him a running commentary and move slow and smoothly as you do each part of the process. Moving fast or picking his legs up quickly can startle him. Talk in a low calm, babyish tone. It might catch his attention. Try placing something on the changing table which plays music or moves... My changing unit sits on top of Kirsty's cot and so I can play her musical mobile each time we change her nappy/clothes. It keeps her occupied.

p.s. remember we're all here for you and the chances are some or all of us have gone through each stage you are, so do as you're doing and come ask us

You're doing a fabby job, so just trust in yourself ((((huggles))))

Adriana use to scream bloody murder when we changed her diaper as a newborn.. It literally hurt our ears.. But that didn't last vary long.. Now she doesn't mind getting diaper changes..

My advice is to change them in one area.. So they know that's why they are there.. Still to this day we change Adriana in the same spot (changing table) and she's a perfect angel during her diaper changes.

I have two diaper rash creams to recommend and both are okay with cloth diapers. The first is Earth Mama, Angel Baby Bottom Balm: Angel Baby Bottom Balm - heal existing diaper rash and protects against flare ups They carry this product at most WholeFoods.

The second is Butt Paste. The Butt Paste has worked the best for us. It's safe and there isn't anything bad in it for babies. Believe me.. I made sure. I won't use anything on him that isn't non-toxic.

Landen used to hate getting his diaper changed. Now he can roll and scoot away from me so now I hate diaper changing time lol! I have no good advice on cloth diapers but I would not worry over the red marks. Landen gets them from everything doctor said its just because he has pale skin.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those pics they are too cute!

Amara used to hate having her diaper changed. I think it was because the wipes were cold and she needed to get accustom to them. I was using the Pampers wipes which are really moist and I guess were colder. I switched a couple weeks in to a different brand (I think it was something called Premium Select or something like that, can't remember) and these ones were dryer. I think she got used to them and the crying stopped. I've switched back to the Pampers brand since and we have no issues.

Both boys HATED diaper changes when they were really little. And of course being boys they would usually pee all over at least one change a day which would make the whole procedure ten times longer! It was mostly the coldness of the wipes though because when I got the wipe warmer out they were much better. I thought since Liam was born in December was why the wipes were a big deal but even though Loch was born in August he still didn't like the cold wipes. Even today when I use a wipe on Loch he'll flinch and tell me "cold Mommy, cold."

Most every post circ baby hates changing diapers that I have seen......Just like when you mess with any kids cuts---I don't like it much when I have to change a bandaid on myself if their is a cut there, it hurts----I bet it gets a little better when the circ heals up. And some babies just hate be be naked. LOL Even if you using the environmental "good" stuff for diaper soap--if you don't rinse them enough they will be irritating to sensitive skin. (how do you wash your CD? ---Just wondering since I will have to do it also )

Dustin hated getting his diaper changed and having a bath for a while. Now it's one of our favorite moments. I get the biggest goofiest smiles out of him and we talk to each other. Especially bath time. Then you get into the stage where they learn to crawl and roll and you begin to hate diaper changes and they couldn't care less. Then you get to another stage where they learn to walk and they scream and yell when you try to lay them down to change their diaper. I learned how to take it off and put it on all while he was standing up haha.

It's all normal. I don't know much about Cding though

Just wanted to add that Liam got circ'ed when he was 1 day old and Lochlann not til he was 2 weeks old and they both screamed equally at diaper changes those first few weeks. So I don't think it was the circ so much as it was they just hated being changed.

DS didn't cry much getting changed....he liked being in just a diaper as a newborn laying on DH's chest - he'd probably been okay naked but DH wasn't having that. Harrison was a very easy going newborn and didn't cry really over anything but being hungry.....so I have no advice on diaper changing...especially CD cause I am way too impatient and lazy to do all that! So sorry!

I will say though that I never used gauze on his circ....I just did the vaseline thing and his healed very quickly. Maybe the gauze are irritating his penie? One day he'll be taking his clothes off in the front yard while you're cleaning out the garage and running around going "look at my penie" and you'll think back to the days that he hated having his clothes taken off and wonder ....when did it all change! (PS - true story from a few weekends ago!!!)

His circ is pretty much healed up so I think we'll skip the gauze and vaseline here soon. It's kind of weird because he doesn't hate every diaper change, but a lot of them. I think sometimes he is just more fussy and sometimes he's hungry because I try to change him before a feeding and not after so he will spit up less. I'm using a little cornstarch on his booty right now since it's just a bit red. And I'm going to rewash all my cloth dipes and make totally sure all the suds are getting out. My first wash I did a prewash, then a hot wash with an extra rinse, but maybe I used too much detergent.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. It sounds like every baby is different and some hate diaper changes and some don't mind.

I never used gauze after their circ's either. Are you supposed to after the initial gauze falls off? You'd think after 2 boys I should know this.

Maybe its the age of being 3 but Liam likes to show off his penis as well. Little boys are too funny! LOL

I hope your new washing strategy works for you. Loch would always get red from the cloth after a couple days so I had to keep switching between cloth and disposables (desitin is the only thing that helped his butt). Now we mostly do sposies because I just got tired of it all and I hated seeing him get rashes. It sounds like it could just be too much soap. I always did a prewash in cold/cold--1 rinse. Then a hot/cold wash with just a bit of soap--2 rinses. Then another warm/warm wash (no soap)--2 rinses. I know I got all the suds out but Loch has very sensitive skin and just couldn't take the detergent. I really wanted to get the soap that's recommended (Charlie's soap or something) but I'd have to order it online since the nearest store that has it is like an hour and a half away or something and I hate to admit it but I just couldn't be bothered to go through all that trouble so we've all but abandoned the cloth for now. I hope his little redness clears up!
