Has anybody done this? Did it work to help prevent a tear or need for episiotomy? I'm reading that you should start at 34 weeks - but if I am pretty sure I"ll deliver early should I start earlier? I didn't have a very big cut with DS and it healed really fast and never gave me any problem but I'd like to not have to deal with it at all this time and I'm willing to massage the cooter if I have to. Just wanted to find out if you ladies felt like it helped? so give me your
Thanks a bunch!

I'm curious if this actually works too! With belly and baby still 3 weeks ahead, i think i wanna start this sooner rather then later.

I did it, and I tore anyway, but she was also born soo fast. It was a little confusing to me at first, but I feel like maybe it did make a difference because I didn't feel any pain when I pushed her out and I had a med free birth. I don't know if it was because I did perineal massage or not, but that was my experience. I started at 33 weeks, and using vitamin E oil, I think, and I did it every single night. I plan on doing it again too. I figure it can't hurt!

You can do it yourself? But how do you know what your massaging? I only figure I couldnt do it myself...cuz that area is no longer visible to me.

I did it with both girls. I did it once or twice a week for six weeks with Lily and had a second degree tear. I did it every night for six weeks with Violet and had a super-teeny tiny, itty bitty tear. I never felt it and my doula said it was the equivalent of a paper cut, lol.

sounds like it should help...I think I'm going to give it a try. I tested it out the other night and like Nikki said I'm not sure I"m massaging the right area but I think as long as your down there putting pressure on that skin between the two areas your doing what your suppose to do. I've read in several books how to do it but you never know. Is K-Y Jelly okay to use? Most of the books say it is? Thanks ladies for the input!

research is iffy on it. Some say yes it helps others says no. But both agree that it can't hurt! So I was going to do it just in case. Speed of pushing/delivery helps the most, in water helps a good deal, small baby head is a factor LOL, BTDT are better off and position your pushing in helps alot (squatting is best, flat on back is worst).

I tried to do it a couple times but it was way to hard for me to do on my own being so big. In the end I didn't need it because of my c/s.

Good info Angela....I hope my baby girl has a small head (LOL!!!). I'm wondering if I can squat to give birth even if I have an epidural hooked up to my back....cause I'm not giving that up for anything? I'm going to start it soon.....I'm hoping since its my second baby that I'll not have any cut this time. I'll have to ask at my appt tomorrow what the likelihood of needing a cut is if you had a cut the first time?

I looked over the leaflet I got from my doula on it, got grossed out, and decided against it Actually, since Dustin supposedly loves that area so much, I asked him to do it. I told him he didn't have a choice, he has to get all up in that. I love bossing him around even though he hardly does what I say.

I didn't do it with Liam and had a second degree tear. I did it with Loch but I don't remember when I started and I didn't do it every day--I want to say I started around 34 weeks. I got a very tiny tear with him but I probably wouldn't have torn at all if he wasn't born so fast and had such a huge head!

I didn't do it. I read that it doesn't really help that much to do it while pregnant, but it can help if it's done AS you are pushing. No idea if that is true.
I was so afraid of a big headed baby b/c Dh had a huge head when born, but I think Matthew's was normal...they didn't ever tell me measurements. I did tear almost to the rectum, but it was superficial and I think from me pushing him out so fast. Once they told me I was complete and could push, I went to town!

Michelle - I told my DH about it and that I wanted to do it and he was totally grossed out and said - "just don't do it in front of me"....so props to you if you get your DH to do it for you...I bet my DH would have done it for first baby - but now he's a BTDT and he thinks he's better than that - HA
Shannon - what does superficial tear mean?

I believe it is a first degree tear. It didn't extend to the muscle. She still stitched it up though.

I tried to do it and maybe did it about 4 times, it was easiest to do slouching in bed, ftt together, knees apart (nice!). It's the skin/muscle area between your hoohah & butt.
Cooking oil was recommended to me.. I had a PDF file someone linked me to which explained & had a drawing... I can't find it but let me go search my posts... back in a mo!
Here it is link
Kate (greeneyes) linked me. It tells you on page 2 what lubricant you can try using.

I never knew if this could make a difference. I might have to try it when the time comes.
