I was doing my first pumping session and my co-worker knocked on the door to come in. She had to get coffee for my boss because he couldn't wait 5 mins for me to finish. She then told me while I was pumping that he wants to know how much longer I'm going to be doing this for. I guess he was complaining that I'm still having to pump each day. I told her until September. But I plan on pumping for as long as he needs it. I'm not risking my supply at my one year mark because I want to continue to nurse. I will have to see what Oliver's nursing/breast milk needs are when he is a year. I'm hoping not to be at this job when he turns a year but it makes me mad that he is asking how much longer I'm going to pump. It's known of his business is it?

What a jerk! No, it isn't any of his business. Pumping/breast feeding is one of those areas that is off limits to a boss. There's nothing he can do, he can't make you stop and he can't punish you for doing it, so he needs to just shut up and deal with it. I think if he says/does anything again that you write a letter to HR or something letting them know you feel harassed. That is if you have an HR department.

There isn't an HR department. He is the owner. It's a very small family owned company.

Luckily Indiana is a state with good BF/Pumping rights! Although they don't do anything to companies that don't follow them.

Ugh I'm sorry Resi. That's just so unfair and unfortunately... I'm sure it makes you feel uncomfortable. I wish he had a wife at home who could explain to him how awesome BFing is and how GREAT it is that you're willing to do it. I'm sorry.

*sigh* I know the feeling, Resi. My boss's wife took me aside and told me that I was taking too long pumping. She said, "Aren't you supplementing yet?" - Reid was like 4 months old, if that! Makes my blood boil just thinking about it.

That makes me so mad. And to think that is coming from a women who has children. Not everyone supplements or wants to. My boss thinks boobs are made for sex and that pumping "takes away the romance." Those are his words - not mine. It seems like so many people are misinformed about breastfeeding.

How incredibly rude! It is absolutely NONE of his business what you do with your boobs or how you choose to feed Oliver! If I was working I would have been pumping well past a year. I really hope you're able to get out of there sooner rather than later!

I have to say the comments don't get any better the older your baby gets. Lochy will be 21 months on Thursday and we're still nursing here. I get comments all the time, especially if I happen to NIP (doesn't happen often at all but we still do occasionally). I suggest you stop by the breastfeeding past one year board--we have a lot of informational stickies and one especially about how to deal with criticism.

Big *HUGS* to you! You're doing a great thing for Oliver!!!
