I have a HUGE question....well, it's huge for us! Preston is obviously a year old now, and we're going to continue breastfeeding until he's two or until he self weans, whichever should come first. I have noticed with him, that he'll eat baby food still (I'm paranoid so I still feed him 3rd foods) but if I offer him boob first, he won't eat ANY baby food. The other day, yesterday actually before naptime, I got him a jar of baby food and he only ate two spoonfuls and then climbed into my lap and got into nursing position and tugged at my shirt. So I gave him boob and he was completely happy with that. Now, I know that at a year, it's okay to continue breastfeeding, but food should be his main source of nutrition. Is it okay if he skips the food and just has boob? Or should I offer the food first and then if he's still hungry, give him boob??

I think as long as he his happy and healthy the way he is doing things is just fine. I was still giving Lochy homemade baby food til he was about 15 months and he still nursed quite a bit then. Have you visited the breastfeeding past one year board? There is a ton of great info there and a lot of it regarding nutrition and food.

Lochy is still nursing, however we're down to once a day now. He nurses first thing in the morning and will rarely eat breakfast because of that. If he happens to skip a day (like today) he eats a nice breakfast.

What I did was try the regular food first and if he ate it great but if not I knew he was ok because he was still getting some great breast milk. I guess basically I just go with the flow and he found his own pattern and own way.

I have no experience here and am really unsure as to the best approach. I think that if I was in the same position I would offer the food first and then the boob.

I have no idea what is best to do. I would most likely go with what Preston wants. What about offering him food a couple hours after he nurses?

I have a question.. How often do most babies nurse at 1 year old?

Preston nurses 5 times a day and then all night. He nurses at 7am (breakfast), 11am (lunch), 2pm (snack), 5pm (dinner) and at 8pm before bed. And then almost all night long. If I'm eating when he wants to nurse, I'll offer food until I'm done eating, and then I nurse him. I'm nursing right now. He's also a comfort nurser. I feel like I have a boob in his mouth all day sometimes.

I've tried offering ood afte nursing, he'll eat a little, but not enough to be considered a meal. I'm not sure though.

I usually nurse Oliver first and then offer him a solid baby food. Sometimes he will only eat a couple bites. He usually eats about 2 ozs at the most at a time. We offer him food usually twice per day. He nurses or has a bottle of pumped BM 7-8 times per day/night.

Yeah, that sounds like Preston. When he eats food, it's mainly cheerios or crackers.

At a year old Loch was nursing probably 6-8 times a day (including during the night). He was a huge night nurser. Loch has always been good about eating (once he got the hang of it) which is why his nickname is Landfill. But there were lots of times still at that age that he didn't want regular food and preferred the boob. Everything evens out.

Breastmilk is amazing in the fact it changes to what baby's needs are.....so as long as he is growing and having his dirty diapers your fine. His body just may not want the solids yet-----you may never know why that is or someday you will realize it was for a reason....I say don't push it, but keep offering and just let him go at his own pace.

Okay, so I'll offer him food, but give him boob if that's what he wants. Just wanted to make sure because I read in Parents magazine that bfing is okay, but shouldn't be the main nutrition and I didn't think that was right, but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong for Preston.
