I finished my first ultramarathon! I started running around 5:15AM and broke away from the main pack (almost 700 people) early on. By mile 7 I was suffering some serious leg cramps. I started taking in more salt and gatorade but they continually got worse. By mile 20 I could barely walk and running was out of the question. People were catching up to me and passing me left and right. By mile 24 I was ready to quit. Unfortunately the last checkpoint was not until mile 27. I called my BF and had him waiting at the checkpoint to pick me up as soon as I could make it there. Around this point, a group of 5 hikers caught me and 'adopted' me to their team, Team Blue. I was fed ibuprofen and Gatorade and a powerbar and they wouldn't let me quit. Despite the giant blisters forming inside my shoes and the leg cramps that hobbled me, they got me to the final checkpoint. It was obvious they completely expected me to drop out at this point. I looked at Shane and I just couldn't do it. We bandaged my blisters and got some boiled potatoes with salt into me (for electrolytes). I packed some food into my Camelbak and dropped all my non-essentials with Shane. I found a second wind and started trudging on alongside Team Blue. As we approached the 31 mile mark my Garmin died so I don't have an estimate of my times. I called Shane from the horse farm (approximately 2 miles from the finish line) and he started walking out to meet me. He met up with Team Blue about 1.5 miles from the finish. If it wasn't for Shane I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to finish despite another handful of ibuprofen. Shane grabbed me by the hand and dragged me that last 1.5 miles, even running at some points. I just shut down mentally and let him pull me along. I came to the last uphill and I could hear the cook-out and party at the end. I pushed up the hill and as soon as I got to the top I could see the line! Shane let go of me and I found the strength to actually run across! I don't have an official time but I'm estimating it took me around 13 hours. It was the most brutal thing I have ever done but also extremely rewarding. So if you made it this far thanks for reading and I will have the pictures up in a jiffy.
Morning of 4AM:
Big hill 10 miles in:
Me at the top (the on and off thunderstorms brought back my 'fro):
Giant hill 17 miles in:
Last giant hill 29 miles in:
Shane and I at the end:
Dirty legs:
New bumper sticker:
T-shirt:
Celebratory roses:
I can't walk today but it's worth it!
