What is the difference? I had a family member recommend the bradley method vs. Lamaze but I'm not familiar w/ it?? I also have started looking into hynobabies?? What's the difference between these two methods?? does anyone know??
Also- same family member recommended having a Doula at the birth? (actually said it was a must) ?? Is it something I should look into???

I'm not familiar with hyponobabies. But I wanted to chime in about the Doula. They can be a wonderful help but don't feel like you necessary one! Check into it but don't feel pressured

We took 12 bradley classes. I enjoyed them although everything I learned I already knew from my own research for the most part. The three big things are childbirth education, provide excellent coach/doula training , and teach relaxation techniques. I don't think it helped me in my labor & delivery but that is because everything went out the window when I was induced after my water broke and I did not go into labor on my own. I don't regret taking the classes because it was a good experience.
Is your plan to try for a 100% natural birth? If so you might want to look into a doula. I as going to have one but it ended up not working out. To be honest.. in my situation a doula would not have helped me. I had my mom and husband with me and it was a enough.

I haven't done enough research into this either... but just from snipits posted here and there on the board I think I will plan on doing hypnobabies. From what I gather (and please jump in to correct me if I'm mistaken) it's a series of CDs that you listen to to prepare your body for birth, and a track for the birthing day, etc. etc. to hypnotize you so your body can be relaxed while your mind stays alert and focused on what's going on. I think it does a lot of focusing on using positive terms as well like 'pressure waves' instead of 'contractions,'etc. from what I remember from Nikki (niknok's) birthing experience. I know that Nikki, Anna, and Katie all did hypnobabies and all went on to have med-free births.
I don't know anything about the bradley method.
A doula would be nice but is extra $ we can't really spare at this point. It's worth looking into but I definitely wouldn't say it's a must.

Shannon, If you are interested in a doula you can always look for one in training. They will usually do 2-3 births free of charge. Are you hoping for a natural birth?

That's the plan for now. The thought of an epi sounds worse to me than the pain... I have a friend who has had really severe complications from one and just the thought of not being able to really feel/move and having a catheter etc really scares me a lot. I know I haven't BTDT so I don't really know what to expect and things can change but yes I'm hoping for a med-free birth.

Ditto what Shannon said about hypnobabies.
I assume you are trying to go med free?
I believe that Bradley method teaches you how to deal with pain whereas Hypnobabies is supposed to teach how to not feel any pain.
I did Hypnobabies and the last bit of my labor was still intense pain, but the rest was manageable. I was also not a great Hypnobabies student. I think it DID prepare my body in lots of ways though, keeping me relaxing throughout most of labor, keeping me positive about pregnancy when I tended to be nervous about it.
I used a doula in training, cheaper than a regular doula. Highly recommend. I credit my doula as a large part of the reason why I got my natural birth. Will right more later, gotta take Matthew to dr for checkup.

I think Bradley is a crock of %^&*. Any method that tells you that you have to stay in 1 position thruout the entire laboring process is set up to fail. That said, they do a great job of preparing you for childbirth and teaching you what to expect, so the classes are worth it for that, but as far as a birthing method, I think it's crap!

If you can afford a doula or your insurance will pick up the fee for a doula--then they are a MUST. But I'm biased since I am one LOL. But really they are very worth it.
HB---Shannon and Shannon explained it great. I LOVE it. No matter what happens during my labor its already been worth it---just the great sleep I have gotten and the way that I know have such a positive thought process about my body....it taught me to trust my body again--that alone was worth it for me!
Shannon I don't have your birth story blog link!? (can you PM it to me so I can add it to my blog?)
Here is my blog with free demos and a few people (from here) birth story using it! Trying to Bring a Dream to Life: Hypnobabies
And here is my blog with many videos of HB!

Thanks girls! I am *hoping* to go med free! Everyone thinks I'm crazy and I'm getting a lot of opinions when I say it. I think I'm going to look into hypnobabies...I saw I can do a home study w/ that! I'm not sure I'm going to go w/ a doula- we can't afford one!

Doulas that have been trained but not gotten enough births for their certifications are very cheap if not free. And its also worth a call to your insurance company---there are a few that realize how much money a doula saves them (by helping mom avoid so much extra stuff) that they are willing to pick up the cost. And finally some hospitals have them on staff--so its worth calling around. I Know they are very expensive in CA but they also have the most hospitals with them on staff....so you may luck out!

I would highly recommend Bradley. It teaches not only how to find comfortable positions in which to labor and how to deal with the pain, but your husband is also a trained doula at the end of the series. They even receive a card that says they are certified by the Bradley Method. My husband was a fantastic help to me during labor. There is also information about nutrition, breastfeeding, what to do if something happens during labor (things do go wrong sometimes, but it helped us to feel prepared), and parenting. For us it was definitely worth it.
Jess - Our study of Bradley from reading the original book, the workbook from class and the classes placed emphasis on multiple laboring positions. There was no advice to stay in one position throughout the laboring process.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet but HB also does a classes on nutrition/BF/Interventions/Newborn norms/Newborn minds/exercise/Positioning/etc.
when I compared the two *I* felt that HB had everything Bradley has but more. Bradley did go more in depth on the nutrition and positions. Where HB does more of why certain things are good/bad for you for food and their positions training is more of a Listen to your body and follow it...and a couple of good push positions for opening pelvis. *I* just felt Bradley was everything i had read in books already.

When I took my bradley classes it was all about trying several different positions for laboring and pushing. The one position the said not to stay in was on my back. Are you thinking about lamaze?

I didn't do either but I did do Hypnobirthing with both boys. It is along the same lines as Hypnobabies but not exactly the same. The hospital I had Liam at offered the classes so I took them there along with listening to the CD at home. I did get some great sleep out of that CD; I don't think I ever listened to the whole thing. I've had 2 natural, med-free, births and I didn't have a doula for either one. My dh was great at helping and supporting me during labor and I wouldn't want anyone else there to do that for me. Just my personal preference though. I'm also one that during labor needs compete silence during a surge (contraction) and don't like to be touched and need the lights low. So the less people around me the happier I am. I know I have both my birth stories down in the Natural Childbirth area.

No, it was Bradley, but there weren't any local classes offered so we just did an at-home class using the book. It told us one specific position to stay in for optimum relaxation and it was total crap, especially with back labor. Plus my dh pretty much froze when he saw me in so much pain, and was completely useless.

I personally did do any classes or courses. But I think if I were to I would go with Hypnobabies! It seems to have a great success rate here on our WTTC Grad board hehe.
I just sat in the shower until I felt the urge to push, then pushed. My labors were pretty fast though and I think if they were longer I would have gotten medication? Maybe I'm not to sure. The epidural scares the crap outta me. I, like Shannon, would rather skip the epidural and all the processes that go with it. *shiver*
