When Ben and I got engaged we decided April 09 for a bunch of reasons, one of them being that I'd be done with school in May. Well that didn't happen... I wound up needing more pre-reqs than we'd originally thought. Either way, while I'm not exactly sure WHEN I'd be graduating it had to be soonish just due to the amount of time I've been in school. I know I need a couple math classes and to do an internship still. Now I'm pregnant and throwing pretty much all of it out the window. I was going to do a class over the summer that I needed... there was only 1 being offered that I needed. So I went to sign up but couldn't b/c I needed to be cleared for it. I emailed someone @ my school about it, she said she'd clear me so I could register. Well the hours for it were M-T from 3-6:45 since we're on summer session. I can't make that work with my work schedule and decided to not do classes over the summer. I didn't plan on going back in fall since by the end of the semester I'd be 8+ months pregnant and trying to do finals, etc. Yuck.

ANYWAY... so I didn't sign up for the class. I thought. I guess instead of clearing me the woman just signed me up for the class. I have a scholarship that pays for it. I just found out about this YESTERDAY and the class ends NEXT WEEK. I will fail it. There's nothing they can do. And there goes my 4.0.

UGH I am just so frustrated. We're supposed to check our student email at least once a week and I haven't been doing that since I wasn't taking any classes... but if I'd checked it I'd have known I guess. So it's my own danm fault basically.

This totally sucks.

I think you need to try talking to someone higher up to get if off your record. Did your scholarship money get used to pay for this class that you thought you cleared? UGH. People are so dumb- I'm sorry, Shannon! I think you can get it fixed though.

You will get school done, I know it. Are you planning on working after you have the baby? I think that if you guys can afford it, that you should just try to get school done after the baby is born. Believe it or not, I think it will be good timing. Going to class will be a good way for you to get "me" time.

Ugh.. That sucks big time. I'm sorry that happened to you. What are you going to school for? I don't remember. Are you planning on working/going to school after your baby is born?

You need to call them everyday until they take it off your record. The woman who "cleared" you had no right to enroll you in a class without your permission. Period!

And how dare they do all this without one phone call? E-mail only?! I know it's a new modern age and all, but seriously: e-mail only?

Schools have to be one of the most disorganized, out of communication type establishments of any other on the planet. I have monthly if not daily problems with both mine and Clint's registration, financial aid and so on

Clint had a class he dropped that never dropped that we had to pay for, with an F on his record as well, so I'm really pissed to hear this happening again. Who the hell told her to register you? And who decided that campus email is the best route of communication (that pisses me off too). We are commuter students and dont even think to check our campus email but all the important stuff comes through there. Bah.

So. How many classes do you have left and how long is internship? Is there any way to do even one class but do it online, this fall? Online at least has less risk.

oh no! Shannon I'm so sorry! The school system can be so screwed up at times! You definitely need to try to talk to someone about getting that off your record, YOU didn't sign up for the class...

I'm really sorry Shannon. A very similar situation happened with my online course last summer. I hope there is some way it can be remedied.

Go to your Registrar's Office. They CAN take it off your record. You will have to go through an appeals process, but it can be done. In your situation, I don't see why they wouldn't approve your appeal. You could probably also appeal to the billings department to be reimbursed for at least part of the money (though that's harder to get approved). I work for a state university and I'm pretty sure they're all run more-or-less about the same. I think most professors and departments don't realize that it is even possible to have a class taken off your record, so you just may not have talked to the right people. And this is something you'd do at the end of the semester when the class is over...

FOR NOW, you can also appeal to DROP the class. I'd suggest you try this first. It'd be much easier to get the class dropped than to have an F dropped from your record.

A third option is to appeal for an Incomplete instead of an F. Then you are usually given 3-6 months or some other time frame in which to complete the course. You would have to do all the work on your own, though... This would need to be approved by the professor of the course, so it really depends on if that professor is nice or a total douche.

Good luck! I'm sorry she signed you up for this class. You'd be amazed at how often this happens! I used to field those calls in our Registrar's Office (thank God I don't do that anymore) and students would frantically call at the end of every semester because their adviser or a professor signed them up for a class and they didn't realize it.

That really, really sucks. But as was mentioned above, you CAN go through an appeals process. I did that my last semester because half way through the semester the college CANCELLED my student loan, and I could not sign in to do my homework assignments (they were online classes). I FAILED 3 classes because of it. I went through an appeals process, and the failed grades were taken off my record. It's a bit of a headache, but worth it if you have a good average you don't want to ruin.

That really, really sucks but I agree that you should try to talk to someone about it. If you talk to someone, you at least have a chance of getting it removed, if you don't it's a done deal.

Oh man... that does suck. That is incredibly unfair, especially for as hard as you have worked. Don't you have to sign for the courses you enroll in? It seems I remember doing that.

That really bites the big one! It looks like you may still have some options though Shannon. Don't give up and let your school do this to you!

I understand why she signed me up. I go to the University of GA which is in Athens, about two hours away from where I live. They have several decent sized satellite campuses & I go to one of those. We do all of our registration online and I've never even been to the main campus for anything. So since our class sizes are much smaller we kind of create our own schedules... we tell Athens "here is ous schedule" but then the professors talk to the students and will arrange to come for like 3 hours one day a week instead of 2 1.5 hour sessions, kwim? So I had emailed the woman saying "I'm trying to sign up for class XYZ and need to be cleared. What are the actual days we'll be meeting for it?" since I can't trust the regular schedule since it's pretty much just fluff for main campus. Well... she writes back saying that those ARE the hours... and that's when I was like ah well can't take the class... oh well and never wrote her back. But I can see WHY she signed me up... since I told her I was TRYING to sign up- kwim? And it's like a tight knit thing... she has taken classes with me and recently graduated and has been working there the last like 2 semesters. So I can't be furious with her... it makes sense why she did it its just bull that I didn't know until NOW. And she didn't call until YESTERDAY when it's too late to do anything. She said I could withdrawl but it's be WF (withdrawl fail) since I haven't been there.

She said she's called and explained to the Athens main campus and nothing can be done. I suppose I should take you ladies' advice and call the Registrar's Office myself but I also don't want to get her in trouble. My scholarship is unlimited so as crappy as it is to say it's not like I'm out of money... I'm not worried about that I'm just worried about the F because then even if it didn't totally bomb my GPA I still won't be able to graduate with honors.

Resi -- I go to school for Housing & Consumer Economics w/ a concentration in personal finance so I can sit the board to be a Certified Financial Planner when I'm done.

I did get an email that the two math classes I need are being offered online that I could do during the fall but there's just no way I'll be disciplined enough to teach myself math... I'm a total procrastinator.

Ugh I just want this to go away. I feel like ignoring it will sort of make it go away. This just sucks..

I would go directly to the registrar. Where I work, you can even skip appeal processes that way. Maybe state how it is ridiculous anyone can change you schedule without your explicit consent and a signature. That is how it is done around here b/c of situations like yours. Just asking if you can get into a course is not asking her to add you, and it is an honest mistake for her to have made. So don't worry about getting this gal in trouble if staff usually does this sort of thing--she won't get in that much trouble if any at all. These situations happen a LOT at all campuses, and it is the squeaky bird that gets it fixed (if it is fixable). I mean, if avoiding the WF means that much to you that is what I would do. GL

ETA: you would be surprised what you can get just by asking or being persuasive/persistent to the right people. This is OT, but we bought all our appliances from Home depot and were able to negotiate down from the sales price and get killer screaming deals. Well, Dustin did it, but I never would have thought you could do that, especially when it is already on sale for like 15% off. We ended up getting 40% off some of these high end appliances!
