Bah! I am so overwhelmed. Initially we just planned on going with bum genius one size AIOs b/c it seemed like the closest to sposies and would be easiest. Then I started thinking about how everyone doesn't like every single dipe and I shouldn't have a stash of all one brand. Then I started looking at prefolds and those don't seem so bad but I'm getting really overwhelemed with sizing and how much of what I need. I just want like a list to buy it and be done. haha. What you have looks good... you use those and then a cover, yeah? It's kind of like a prefold excecpt for that it's fitted, yes? I just don't know if I want to deal with a bunch of different sizes and trying to figure it all out. The room is getting brighter, but I still haven't had my 'lightbulb moment' on all this cloth stuff.

Everyone's personal taste on cloth diapers differs, but if you read the threads where the preggies ask what newborn diapers they should use, 95% of the answers will say prefolds and KL0s. I bought a TON of prefolds and ended up never using them. Sure, they were inexpensive but Lee never wanted to be bothered with them and he did almost all of the diaper changing for the first month or so (I'm spoiled, I know ). However, we both totally loved these KL0s, they are a great work-horse diaper that fits a wide range of babies well and are VERY absorbent.
Oh, and yes, you would need a cover with these. I bought six covers because I wash every third day. So basically I would put on a diaper and cover #1 and then at the next change I put on a diaper and use cover #2 while I set cover #1 aside to air out a little. Then the next change would be a diaper and cover #1 while cover #2 aired out, etc. At the end of the day I would put cover #1 and 2 in the pail and use covers #3 and 4.

Shannon, I bought a lot of different kinds to try out. The CD that I HATE the most are Bum Genius. I got the OS and Oliver does not fit in them hardly at all. He is only 18 lbs and they should still fit! They always bust open. They have also leaked from day one 1/2 of the time! I have 5 of them all bought at different times and they all stink! Other people love them but they did not work well for us.
I know how overwhelming it can be. You should find someone in the area that sells them or uses them to teach you in person about all of them. That made it so much easier for me to know what I wanted to try out.
This is what I started out with:
8 small covers
36 small chinese prefolds (lasted about 4 or 5 months)
1 small AIO - Bumkins (lasted to about 3 or 4 months)
4 AIO - Bum Genuis
24 cloth wipes
Now I have:
4 medium covers - thirsty & bummis super brites (I prefer the thirsty)
12 medium chinese prefolds
4 medium AIO - Bumkins (my favorite)
I do laundry about every other day. I prefer the AIO's and prefolds with covers. I only use prefolds and covers at night because anything else he will leak out of.
P.S. I thinking I need to buy some more diapers but I'm cheap!

I have a stupid amount of CD right now! LOL I got so many for such a good price or even free that I ended up with to many. Hit up diaperswappers.com also. Right now I mainly am going with prefolds and even flats (because of our travel--I wanted diapers that all countries are familiar with and are cheap so if they get ruined I'm not mad and that I can also use as other things!). Then I bought a few AIO/Fitted/Pockets and a TON of covers (I have way to many but this CDing is SO addictive!). I got those just to play with while i'm in the states and to win over family with.

Man, I HATE my stupid pockets. They all leak. And I have 13 BG's so I'm pretty pi$$ed about it. I need to strip them but don't have time to mess with all that.
Resi, you feel the prefold keeps Oliver dry enough at night? I've been putting Matthew in sposies at night to keep him dry b/c he is pretty sensitive to feeling wet and I'm not willing to do anything that makes him sleep less.

Shannon, He would leak right through sposies at night time. I tried them a couple times at night when I was waiting on a bigger size of CD's. He end up soaking the prefold at night but it doesn't leak. He doesn't mind being wet and it's never woke him up before. Oh, I also use a fleece liner to help keep the wetness off of his skin.

I was going to get some prefolds/covers for when the baby is a newborn and then switch over to the one size diapers, but have since changed my mind. I may still use prefolds in the beginning because I have a friend who said she'd loan me her newborn stash, but we'll see if she actually lends it to me or not.
If she doesn't, then we're just going with the OS diapers. Odds are the baby won't fit in them immediately, so we'll probably use disposables for the first few weeks or so... Otherwise, we're going to go with bumGenius and FuzziBunz OS diapers (and a few Happy Heinies because I loved some of the prints). I know some of you have had problems, but I'm hoping we don't. Most often people say they love BG and FB diapers... We have EXTREMELY pure water where we live, so I'm hoping that will help since we won't get any deposits from water.
I guess I'll see in a few months!

If you've got super hard water or an HE machine, you might have a hard time with the synthetic material (microfiber and suedecloth) in the bumGenius diapers. HE washers are fabulous at conserving water but unfortunately that's not great for washing cloth diapers. They need plenty of water to agitate in and the HE detergents are not the best at removing that much soilage. I've got a top-loading HE washer that I can set the water level on and use Tide Original powder and have never had an issue with any of my diapers. I also haven't needed to strip any of my diapers in almost two years of cloth diapering.

KL0's is the brand name of the fitteds, right? is "0" representative of a size... and the KL1's you posted are bigger? Sorry I'm just getting confused b/c like some prefolds are sized by color threading and then I saw all of your different colors listed and was like wait, what. haha. Thanks for explaining your cover rotation, that helped.
I'd like to be able to buy what we need now and not have to worry about the majority of it when the baby is here and I really don't honestly know like how long it takes for baby to get to 20 pounds, etc. so the sizing never makes sense to me. It felt like they would outgrow newborn sized things really quickly so not to spend much $ on it, but then they wet the most diapers in a day right? So you'd need the most even though they grow quickly. ulls hair:
Are prefolds different sizes? I imagine them like burp rags and all the same but then I thought I saw somewhere (like an angela thread? called GMD's or s omething?) where the different color thread means different sizes or something. I thought they'd all be the same size and you could use them always but have to get different sized covers.
Are doublers necessary? They add extra absorbency for night time? You just lay them in the dipe? Am I understanding that right?
Sorry for kind of threadjacking.

How did you feel about your beginning stash? It seems like the higher side of 'normal' from what I've read but also like a LOT in comparison to what your stash is now . Did you use snappis with your prefolds or just kind of fold it over and put the cover on top? Thanks for putting how long they lasted. I'd love to get this all paid for and done with before the baby comes but then if I buy prefolds in small and medium and don't like them then I guess I screwed myself. bah!

... my goal is to have ordered SOMETHING tonight. haha. DH gave me an amount of money and told me I "had to" spend in within one week on baby stuff and that was a couple weeks ago. I feel like if I order a few things and get hands on it'll help.
Resi I should go to a place where they show all of this stuff like you said.... but I feel like I'm right on the verge of getting it... it's just hard making a choice on WHAT I want and then trying to find the best deal on it. I think I'm overthinking this.

The way they grow and what age to expect about what wt is my big issue also! LOL.
Flats are the OLD school diapers (they are like a receiving blanket or a dish towel actually, its just one sheet of cloth). And are the most involved for folding--- Example Here. (but I think with pins make GREAT old time photos! Ben may like a couple just for that!) They are the easiest to clean and fastest to dry and cheap if you ruin them (the perks for me!). These ARE a one size fits all diaper.
Prefolds are a couple thicknesses---usually 4x8x4 (so the middle feels like there is almost a pad sew in it.
GMD= Green Mountain Diapers Prefolds- They are thread colored to tell size, and from what I have been told these and Little Lion prefolds are THE prefolds to get. Prefolds are in multiple sizes-its not a one size fits all diaper.
With Prefolds/flats you can use snappis or pins or just the covers to hold the diaper on---depends on your fold. (I have gotten a few pins to play with -- there is a big difference in the pins--if you want to try pins find METAL head pins--the rest seem cheap and breakable in comparasion)
I don't know the difference between a liner or a doubler or an insert is though.
If I didn't get some much from friends/family to try out I would have just started with some 36 prefolds (Green Mountain Diapers-GMD or Little Lions-LL), 6 others (probably combo some AIO/Pockets/Fitted to to play around) about 5 covers (Thirsties or Bummis---FYI Thirsties just came out with some great Duo covers), 2 snappis, a set of metal head pins, and a pail liner or wet bag, and 24-36 cloth wipes.

Insert: is inserted into a pocket diaper for absorbancy. You can use lots of things as inserts like prefolds. Many inserts that come with pocket diapers are made of microfiber which CANNOT be placed against baby's skin b/c it is too drying and will cause a rash. Hence it must be inserted in the pocket dipe.
Doubler: I guess is called this b/c it is supposed to "double" or increase the absorbancy. Many times they are made of cotton or hemp and they can be placed right against the baby's skin. So say if baby is in a prefold or a fitted you can stick a doubler in for added absorbancy.
Liner: Just goes in the line the diaper and is very thin. You can get disposable paper liners if you want to put on non cloth diaper safe diaper cream. Or if you hate poopy mess you can put one in and just throw the liner that caught all the poop away. But I think most people get thin fleece liners and they allow the moisture through into the diaper and leave the baby's skin feeling dry. Supposedly you can just make your own fleece liners easily. I tried but I think I must have had the wrong kind of fleece b/c it wasn't letting the moisture through so I just bought some cheap fleece liners.
Resi, how do you put on Oliver's PFs? Specifically at night? Do you just trifold and lay in the cover or do you do a fold? I'm thinking even with a fleece liner the wetness is going to extend over to his legs if I do my normal fold with a snappi (I don't remember what it's called, maybe the newspaper fold is what I'm using?)

Okay Shannon, my opinion of what you should get (assuming you only want to wash every 2-3 days):
1 or 2 dozen orange edge GMD prefolds
2 dozen yellow edge GMD prefolds
between 6-12 Kissaluvs fitteds size 0
4-5 X-small Thirsties covers (or even better maybe get the new Duo Thirsties covers, but I haven't used those because they just came out)
2 Snappis
2 Large wetbags, I use the brand PlanetWise and they've worked fine for me
24-36 cloth wipes, but I just use cheap baby washcloths
This would be a nice newborn-small stash

I loved my stash when he was a newborn. I never used my snappi. I just sent it to Angela. I never could figure out how to fold the prefold and use it. I just folded it down and put the cover over it. Prefolds were great because I had plenty and they are cheap! The first few month you will go through sooo many diapers. I changed him every 1-2 hrs when he was a newborn. Believe me.. you will end up buying more once your baby is born. Even if it's just a few more.

I put him in prefolds during the night and a few times during the day when we are at home. I like using the Bumkin AIO's when we go out because they are not bulky. Yes, I trifold and lay them in the cover and fold down the top part but don't tuck it in.
I have 3 doublers but never use them. I think Damon and my mom use them sometimes. I have about 6 fleece liners for night time.
Oh.. just as an example.. Oliver is 18 lbs and 9.5 months old. He is still in his medium sizing. I only bought chinese prefolds because the GMD had way to many sizes and it confused me. I also didn't look into them until I had already bought my prefolds.
Shannon, I also HIGHLY recommend getting a spray hose that attaches to your toliet. You won't need it at first when you have the BM poopy diapers but when your baby starts eating solids you will want to spray the diapers off if the poop doesn't roll off into the toliet. It works really well.
