Last night Ben was up late editing photos and took the dogs out around 2AM before he went to bed and while he was outside he heard something screaming. He found a baby kitten in the yard. It was just out in the open crying. He waited a while in case the mama cat was transporting them or something but she never came for it. He woke me up and we went out and got it... it still had its placenta attached and everything! So we took it in and cut the cord and set up a box with a heating pad, etc. and he ran to wal-mart to buy kitten formula and a little bottle. We nursed it during the night and then this morning called animal control and the shelter had a mama cat nursing kittens there. So we took it in and the mama cat adopted our little baby kitten! She was just nursing away We're going to go back Monday morning and visit.

Here's some pictures we took this morning. We got 1 or 2 crappy photos with the P&S last night where you can see its placenta but I don't feel like hooking up that camera. Here's some Ben put online and the last one is from his cell phone at the shelter.

up next to my six pound dog-

& then here @ the shelter, nursing with the adoptive mama cat

I miss the kitten... but we really don't need a cat and were already getting attached. The kitten having a mom cat, breastmilk and a litter to play with is SO much better off than us staying up round the clock trying to formula feed it. So I'm glad it all worked out and we're going back Monday morning to check on her.

It did okay eating... definitely not much though, but it's so tiny it wouldn't normally eat that much I guess. I do miss having Kiwi around, lol... but this is for sure the best option.

OMG, poor little baby! She got really lucky that you guys found her and rescued her. I wonder what happend with her mommy? I'm so glad that she was taken in by the other cat at the shelter. Could you adopt her once she is older and weaned?

Great pics by Ben, as usual!

Aw, such a cute little kitty! One of our cats just had 4 kittens a couple weeks ago. We didn't even know she was pregnant--she was just as tiny and skinny as she always is! We only knew because she let them come out the other day. I love tiny kittens, they're so cute!

Yeah, we could adopt her when she was old enough to be weaned but to be honest, neither of us want a cat right now. With a baby on the way I think we have enough going on. Plus, I don't want all of our pets close in age becausse they'll all die around the same time. I also think that I might be slightly allergic to cats -- MIL has four and whenever I'm over there I'm itching and sneezing and she keeps her place wayy clean so there isn't a lot of hair and stuff floating around. Like we said, we wanted to keep this little one because it just showed up in our lives... but we wouldn't seek out a kitten right now so it's probably for the better we don't get one.

oh oh oh! When I called my mom and told her about the kitten she wanted me to describe it to her... and I'm like you know, it's brown and has stripes... and she's like oh any special markings, and I'm like yeah... it kind of has like a vampire peak on its forehead. and she's like OMG... it's a sign... you have to keep it! I love my mom.

Adorable kitten! But I understand not wanting to add a new pet into your life right now. By rescuing the kitten you not only gave it a mama cat, but also a chance to be adopted by a family that will love it for the rest of its life. I'm sure it will find a good home!
