I'm putting out feelers today for home birth midwives. I don't know if it will work out because of the whole money thing (they're very expensive around here). So I emailed a few of them simply stating I'm in the information gathering phase right now and all I want to know is what insurance they accept and if they don't what their fees are. Simple enough right? So why can't anyone just answer the question? I keep getting those "give me a call to discuss your pregnancy and birth and we can go over all that." I'm not at the point of wanting to discuss my pregnancy and birth, I just want a simple question answered! Why is that so hard?

That is frusterating. Maybe they need to know your history to give you a price? Like if you are high risk or something? They should still be able to give you a ball park figure.

That would be frustrating! I want a home birth this time, but with Brayden I had so much chest pain! If we stilled lived where we did then it'd be easy since I was only about 15mins from the hosp! Here I'm 1hr away. Maybe all of that makes a difference to them and they need to know what the risks are and that sorta thing before they can quote you a price?

They might all work on sliding scales too or if they like you personally they might give you a lower price. So they might have a "set fee" but its flexible depending on your situation.

At least you have options - there is only ONE home birth midwife here in Rochester. She is so hard to track down (she delivered Ani DeFranco at home). I even talked to the midwife of my friend who used her for a home birth in Buffalo and she basically said they are few and far between and gave me the same number I had already called.

I hate when that happens. As ther others suggested, perhaps they have sliding scales or something.
