I got home from work today, and I seriously feel like I am having a heart attack I am so stressed out by my puppy. She's a weimaraner, and I bought her before I knew I was pregnant. There is NO way I would have bought her had I known I would get pregnant. I can't handle her financially or physically. I have felt this way, well, since I found out I was pregnant, but I really loved her. But today I am really realizing it. I get home, she knocked me over when I was taking her for a walk, then she jumped on Elsa and almost scratched her eye. She has a HUGE scratch on her face now, and her claws JUST got clipped. I don't think she would work with a baby. I don't know what to do, as I do not believe in buying a pet and giving them away, but I am going to be a single mom to two kids, and I need to decide what's best for them. What would you do? I thought of asking friends if they know anyone who is interested in a dog. The good news with her is she is crate trained, potty trained, knows basic commands, and is VERY good with other dogs. I'm just having trouble admitting that I can't handle her anymore, and don't have the energy to properly train her.

Weimeriners are incredibly active dogs. My cousin's ex husband had one and it would be outside in their backyard all day while they were at work and literally like ATE part of their house b/c he wasn't being entertained. Add to that that it's a big dog and hard to overpower and I can understand your situation. I don't really approve of giving away pets... but in this case if you can't afford proper training and it's not getting enough room to exercise, etc. then it's kind of better for the dog too if you rehome it. I would look for someone on CL who has owned that particular breed in the past so they know what they're getting themselves into and just whatever you do try to avoid taking it to a shelter.

Sorry you're in this position, I'm sure it's not an easy decision to make.

Thanks Shannon, I did put an ad on craigslist, to see if anyone answers. This is hard because she's really had GREAT care, and I don't want that to stop. If I don't find the ideal home, I'll have to keep her and make it work, but I'd rather her be in a home with someone who has plenty of time for her. I would have had that, but my life changed big time. It makes me really sad. I've been crying about it ever since I decided I am in over my head with having her right now.

And I'm sorry you're feeling really bad about this. It's a tough decision to make, but sincce you're willing to wait it out until you find a GREAT forever home for her... you're doing what's best for her, ya know?

Stephanie, thanks! She's lovely, isn't she!? I think she would be a GREAT family pet. She would have been a PERFECT family pet for Elsa and I, but I know I will be too stressed with the new baby, Elsa, and the puppy, and weimaraners stay puppylike for a long time. They are such great people dogs though!

DH and I had to do that with a german shephard we took in. Her owner committed suicide and her and the other dog needed a new home. We decided to take in the 6 yo pure bred german shephard. The sweetest thing, but she was too tramatized. She would have panic attacks with sirens (we lived near a fire station) and if we were gone too long she would urinate and poo in the house, and also influenced our other dog to do so. We finally had to find a new home for her before we had to remodel OUR new home (i.e. the carpet). We were fortunate and our BIL found a good home for her, with someone who was home all day and could give her the companionship she needed. It BROKE my heart and I did not want to do that to the dog, but it was either her or the carpet and we couldnt afford new carpet. Our dog (the one in my siggy) was happy to be the only child again. You will find someone who will be good to the puppy. It isnt an easy decision though, but just focus on doing what's best for you adn your family.

I saw on facebook that you found a home for her, right? Im so sorry you had to give her up, but I think I read that you said the home she will be going to has a big yard and she will be happy there. Dont be sad, be happy that she will be in a wonderful home!! I know it is probably really hard though
